Indiana University Bloomington, on 4 April and 5 April, will be hosting an international conference: “Blacks in Latin America and the Caribbean.” The conference is being sponsored by the American Studies Program, chaired by Matthew Guterl. Guterl was a visitor to the Dominican Republic last year, with a group of IU students and professors, studying the black African settlements in the DR. There was specific interest in San Pedro de Macoris and the batey Colonia Tumba, in Boca Chica. Academics from the Cuba, Puerto Rico the US Colombia and Peru have been invited as has been Soraya Aracena, a well know Dominican anthropologist. Aracena will be giving a talk on “The State of studies on cultural diversity in the Dominican Republic.”

This should be a worthwhile conference, for those who are close enough to make it click here and here for the press release and the conferences schedule.
