I hear many different aspects of this profession in DR.

In the states, this is a very lucrative job (I work in pharma myself). Here you get a car, paid expenses, trips, bonuses, kickers, etc... ALOT of money to be made and you are basically working on your terms and on your own the whole time.

How does it work in DR? I saw in another thread that they sell the samples! How are drug reps looked at in DR? Is this viewed as a career? a good job? someone to be respected? Are they making money?

Any insight?

Recently I spent 9 days in Centro Medico with a very ill friend. The sales reps I saw who visited were treated with a lot of respect and courtesy. They seemed to go to every area of the clinic. They were well dressed and very professional.

But on the Monday I saw something strange - one rep was seated near the entrance with a small table in front of him and he was selling his samples! I watched a person approach him with a prescription (looked like a presc but I can't be certain). The rep dug into his bag, pulled out a sample pack - cardboard with the 3 pills enclosed and then money changed hands.

No one seemed surprised so I am pretty sure this is normal.

Generally speaking, it is a well thought of profession. The biggest labs have some very good reps and these make a ton of money.

I have a friend at the gym who does this. I believe he told me he makes on the order of 30k a month, which is a fairly good salary here. If you want me to get his phone # let me know.

Thanks for the offer Chip. Where does he live? Maybe we can have an information only interview?

He lives in Santiago right off the Carretera Luperon, not far from Aftab. Hopefully I'll see him Monday, but if I remember, I'll call tomorrow the gym tomorrow night to see if he's there.

What is the perception of Dominican Medical reps and if you know have anything to share about that subject. So many other things are different in DR - wanted to see if there was such a vast difference in this area too...

Thanks,

When I had some ongoing problems in the past, I would usually meet my Dr for a 7:30am appointment at his office in the first floor of Clinica Abreu, to see him immediately after he finished his rounds, and before he started seeing other patients, and to avoid waiting.

Between 7:30 am and 8:30 am I would usually see several medical reps walking into/ through the clinica. Typically, they were 25-30 yr old dominicanos in a suit with their square black bag over their shoulders.

If you want to talk to one or more about their work, this might be the easiest way to encounter them.

Relatively speaking, they make decent money. They always wear suits and keep close contacts with doctors. Sometimes they have to wait hours just to see one doctor. They have to give long lectures to doctors in the offices. The hot temperatures alone can torture a pharmaceutical agent to death. They often have to sit in hot clinics without a/c, waiting for their turn to speak to the MD.
On the bright side, they get to drive a car, expenses paid by the company. i am sure they get other allowances that they get to pocket. They get to spend time with beautiful secretaries of many doctors and get to go out with them. Remember, many secretaries of many doctors are very attractive young girls. These medical reps are also well dressed, young in suits and they drive nice cars. All the right tools to pick up young hot clinic girls. Then if the contacts are right, they get to sell the medical samples and pocket the money. Most guys who work for companies who make la pela or viagra, get to sell the pills on the side. They seem to have unlimited access to the pills and medicine that they are promoting. One agent gave me a full box of 200 la pelas for free. WOW.

A lot of them are female too, btw. Their job is my idea of a nightmare: one of the things I dislike most about living here is the eternity you have to spend in doctors' waiting rooms.

Didn't read all the replies without responding. This is what I have to say.

I have a friend in Santiago that was in this profession. She used to make A LOTTTTTTTTT of money. Well, a lot compared to the basic (if you will) monthly salaries. She used to make like 60 grand a month (pesos).

I believe that. These people are not walking around with bags in hot summer sun in suits or heels (women) to just make 30 k / month. They have other sources to make a lot more money.
I know one guy who has a source in NY. he supplies free samples of lapela and his partner sells them in NY for 10 bucks / pop. Both are gays.

Tigre - she's not a rep anymore?

AZ - do you know how they get into this in DR? Here in the states is a great start up job for anyone just leaving college (degree is the only requirement). Any company is willing to train you and then you come on at a great min salary with great benefits. Do they offer special courses in DR in college?

methinks I am in the wrong business/career here then....if people are making that kind of money in DR then i might just pack my bags and move down there to pimp myself out in a suit and start a new career as an on call medic! LOL

I am not exactly sure how one gets started in this business but I do know that the people who work in this profession have to take courses and seem to be somewhat educated. They speak very professionally and always in their best appearance.
I would imagine a college degree is required.
