Here is a bit of advice to would-be David Bailey?s (renowned photographer?) ? DON?T snap suggestive pictures of your ?girly conquests? whilst here on holiday ? even MORE so if you live or intend living here!!

An internet contact of mine who has visited the country on many occasions did just that on one of his visits & then compounded the folly by sending some of the photos to friends of his via e-mail. He may even have sent some to one of the ?Dominican Girls we have met? websites ? but that is not confirmed yet. Now these were NOT your CentrePage of Playboy, full nudity type photos, just the bikini/partially clad & ?sexy poses? type photos & quite suitable for sending on to friends via e-mail especially if he had had the girls consent. My acquaintance is not into pornographic photo shoots (as far as I am aware!)/

It appears that one or two of the photographs were possibly shown to her by one of the recipients of the e-mail sent out (maybe a boyfriend who thought she was ?HIS? only?) & needless to say, the girl got a bit upset at seeing her posterior being posted across the internet whilst she didn?t get a single peso for the coverage!! So, this time he came a-visiting, the girl who had supposedly had her photo taken by this acquaintance of mine, decided to have him locked up by the fiscal until he paid over some BIG money towards her retirement income fund!! My contact was arrested whilst having an evening meal, driven to the nastier jail in Puerto Plata right by the central square & incarcerated with the regular jailbirds of narco traffickers, thieves, violent attackers etc. etc. etc. Being fairly unused to this environment he was soon overwhelmed by the dangerous environment he found himself in.

Cutting out the ages taken in negotiations, (the ?to?s & fro?s? of Dominican authorities wanting their cut of the ?Gringo?s? extensive wallet) & going straight to the end result, this cost my contact 24 hours in a nasty jail, RD $3,000 in propinas, a trip to the Court House handcuffed to await release by the Judge & a payment of US $3,000 approx (down from the US $10,000 it started at) to all the interested parties ? 2 lawyers, the girl, the judge maybe, ???.. maybe even the ?boyfriend? who started the whole scenario of having received the e-mail photo. Who knows ???

Bear in mind that my acquaintance had a couple of Gringo Ex-Pats whom he knew to help him. These two had picked up a few things since coming to live here & obviously had a contact or two from the way telephone calls started coming in. The US of A Consul was advised of the situation within the hour (even though he is presently out of the country) & he somehow got hold of an otherwise elusive Duty Officer at the American Embassy who started to do HIS thing. The man was out of the main smelly, overcrowded & dangerous jail area in very short order & into a reasonably safe place so he could get some sleep during the nights stay. Not ALL inmates will be so lucky as most Ex-Pats will steer clear of these situations.

So good women/girl chasers, take heed of this warning. It COULD have been something organized many trips ago. It could have been a random opportunity taken rapidly by a hungry lawyer smelling lots of gringo money. As I am unaware of the contents of the original e-mail & even less knowledgeable about the girl in question, I do not know if this was a ?Justifiable? arrest, but I note with concern the opportunities this offers to many girls plying their bodies for trade in that many men like to take photos of these beautiful ?conquests? so that they can pass them over to their friends. If you intend returning to this country in future years ???? do NOT send the photos on especially if those you send to are likely to visit the DR or know people living here. The photos COULD find their way back to the girl whose photo you took!! What is even worse for those of you who ?like the girls? is that you don?t even need to have taken photos to get accused!! Any girl can lay the complaint against you, you are then arrested & incarcerated until you can prove your innocence, OR the police can not get enough evidence together in a 72 hour period to justify you being taken to court ??, OR you pay up. Most people facing 72 hours or more in a dirty, smelly & dangerous cell with hardened criminals will generally settle for paying up. THIS is what the girls & the lawyers prey on!! ~ Grahame.

It's really quite simple.
Do not post chica pix on the net without a written consent form and proof of being 18 or over.
Anyone who does, runs an even greater danger than the above mentioned scenario, as some of these young ladies might have some Lorena Bobbitt skills.

Note to Moderator ......................

I posted this in error in the North EAST forum - could you change it over to the NORTH coast forum please?? This happened in the Sosua/Puerto Plata area & I wouldn't want people to think that Samana et al tourists get up to such shenanigans!!! ~ Grahame.

Sorry to hear about this, and what happened to your friend ! But this is sorta the problems people experience when people befriend prostitutes and putting up their pictures on websites.

Sometimes it's better to avoid them !

You've touched on an interesting point, although it might be better to say, "some Gringos" or "lots of Gringos" and maybe not use the word "most".
Anyhow, that aside, I agree that some tourists really misbehave while on vacation and do a lot of foolish things.
It's like all wisdom gets tossed out the window.

I would like to say that, to the best of my knowledge, this particular case was not quite like that.
It appears to me that the fellow mentioned in the OP, posted those pix, rather innocently/naively.
We are not talking about some perverted scumbag.
We are talking about a nice guy, personable, friendly, always decent, who made a booboo that REALLY came back to bite him in the butt.
I know that this is only my opinion, and that I can't go into a person's mind/heart/soul to know for sure, but it doesn't really matter one way or another, as I believe that the point BushBaby is making, is not about intent, but about the inherent dangers of taking sexy chica photos and posting them on the net.
It's a NONO, plain and simple, and the story told illustrates how much trouble a person can get into, by doing so.
It's just one of those things that joins the list of "Don't do" while on vacation in the DR, like don't do drugs, don't leave your valuables unattended on the beach, don't wear expensive jewelery, don't date underage girls/boys, etc.

Korejdk,
Yes, there are plenty of arrogant gringos to go around, but they are not alone, by any means. There are plenty of euros doing the same things, and aorse, at times. When people go on vacation they tend to want to unwind.

Some may or may not live sh***y lives at home, but in general, they are just average people who have worked all year, and for one or two weeks they let the Brugal get the best of them.

The thing is, some go a tad over the top and end up paying for it. The same type of thing happens all over the world, I imagine, and it probably isn't limited to gringos, although they certainly hold up their end.

Aren't euro's also gringos?
I perceive them that way, as the latest interpretation of the word gringo is the same as estranjero, so Euros would qualify, but then again, there is no doubt that it originally referred exclusively to Americans/US citizens.

I'm not really understanding this situation.

Some tourists take pictures of their so-called girlfriends and post them on the internet all the time on various sites-even videos.

Now its' a problem? Or was this merely a matter of extortion?

Does anyone think this will be a growing trend or just an isolated incident?

It's always been a problem, only now, the chicas are more computer savvy and are starting to find their pix on the net, and they ain't happy about it.
If guys continue to post them, then yes, the trend will grow, and there are bound to be a few streetwise chicas who attempt extortion.

I sense the potential for an argument, so what the heck. Let's go.

Gringos are technically North Americans, and even more technically US Americans.

The word "Gringo" comes from General Santa Anna's troops making fun of the Texans in the Alamo singing "Green Grow The Lilacs" - "Green Grow" = "Gringo". It came to take on a derogatory meaning around the turn of the century, and expanded to include Canadians later in trhat century.

So, now you know the story behind the story, and you also know that Gringos are North American and Eruos are Europeans, and never the twain shall meet.

Thank me later.

While you might be technically right, down here in the DR, "Gringo" means "Any foreigner with a white skin", vs "Haitiano" which means "Any foreigner with a black skin" or "Chino" which means "Any foreigner with a yellow skin"...

That is the way people in the "deep DR" will understand the outside world (I am not talking about fancy AZB Dominicans...)

Squat,
If I can't fight with with AZB what's the sense of fighting?
I take your point about colloquiums, and I agree that words take on different levels of meanings in different circumstances, so I guess we have nothing to argue about. Darn.

I take your point about colloquiums

A colloquium is a 'conference at which scholars or other experts present papers on, analyze, and discuss a specific topic'. Somehow I don't think that the person posted about in the OP was doing that..................:laugh:
(pssst.........it is 'colloquialisms')

We are talking about a nice guy, personable, friendly, always decent, who made a booboo that REALLY came back to bite him in the butt. I know that this is only my opinion, and that I can't go into a person's mind/heart/soul to know for sure, but it doesn't really matter one way or another, as I believe that the point BushBaby is making, is not about intent, but about the inherent dangers of taking sexy chica photos and posting them on the net.

Yes that is my understanding, too. And it is also my understanding that since the face of the girl in question was not in the photo, it would have been very difficult to know whether the posterior was hers or someone else's. In other words this scenario could also be visited on a tourist who did not take photos or not of that particular woman..............you all see the implications, I'm sure. I haven't met the subject of the OP (I was only manning the telephone while others did the jail visits etc) but my impression is the very opposite of arrogance. Lacking in streetsmarts, perhaps. But the scenarios tourists can fall victim to are changing & BB posted to alert people to this.
