I will be in La Zona Colonial around Calle 19 de Marzo on my first day in the country. Please let me know what you would say are good money exchange places around there? Thanks for any info.

You can change US$ at the register inside Cafeteria Paco's at the end of El Conde by Parque de Independencia. If you walk a few blocks down El Conde, you can go to the casa de cambio inside Pollo Rey (inside on the right side) and they may give a better rate. There is also a place called Frank's nearby which some here use, and say gives a good exchange rate also.

DO NOT change money on the street if someone offers. EVER.

Use the ATM

in my experince, the ATMs at the Major Banks give a great exchange rate. Also, you dont have to worry about the ATMs giving out bogus money....

I find that the hotel Intercontinentals Casino gives 34 to 1 and that is usually the best around. Good luck and have a safe trip;)

Dollars for DR Pesos

Is it necessary to have pesos? Doesn't every business accept the US dollar in Sosua?

If not when tipping do I use pesos or dollars?

Thanks

"When in Rome, do as the Romans...."

The currency of the DR is the peso. If you wish to use dollars expect to pay for the priviledge....

Tip in pesos. Stores will take $U.S. but they will not give you a good exchange rate.

Actually Playero and Super Super are pretty close to the street rate if you make a purchase in USD. Playero has even paid higher on occasion when he needs USD to buy lotsa booze. Anywhere else you will get hosed in USD vs RD Pesos.
