I am shocked at this. However, I don't live in the DR nor in neighborhoods like that.
If the authorities were more responsible these things wouldn't happen.
Even though it's not near the resort areas tourist hear of this and wonder if they should vacation there. This, in my opinion is bad for the DR.
What is it with latin american countries that they can't have honest, respectaful police?
My background is Cuban so I have experienced this.
Where Craig was attacked is it any where near the tourist section of Sosua.
This is quite frightening since my 1st trip to Sosua is in Aug.

The US lived the days of lynchings and I cringe at the thought of it. I'm very happy and I consider my country blessed we have progressed as human beings. We have a long way to go. However, we're on the right path.
No where is there a paradise except in Heaven.
These are just my thoughts.

Blessings of Light for the Dominican Republic.

There is another thread on this subject already open:
http://www.dr1.com/forums/north-coast/78177-lynchings.html
From what I can tell, travellor's post was transfered from that thread to here.
Perhaps it is considered another aspect of the topic.

Anyhow, to answer Travellor's questions, Craig lives 5 or 10 minutes from Sosua, if that is considered close.
He's an expat, not a tourist and the events surrounding his misadventure have no bearing whatsoever on tourists or tourism.
As for having honest and respectful police, I do appreciate that ours don't wear halos, but anybody who thinks that the cops in the US are honest and respectful, are dreaming.
Serpico was a good representation of what really goes on there.
The point is, that it's not just a DR thing, nor a Latino thing.
