Hello People!
We had a great trip to Cabarete. We arrived about 8 o'clock Saturday night at POP and where greeted by our Island Buddy. She is a very fine lady that we where introduced to via the internet through this forum from another fine lady who answered one of my previous threads. The wonders of the modern inter web! Talk about going out of your way for perfect strangers. Our Island buddy greeted us with open arms, and proceeded to take us to the Cabarete condo that we rented, in her SUV.
One of the first things I noticed on the drive was a couple of scooter drivers passing a bottle of rum while driving down the side of the road. Right there I decided not to rent a car, as I had planned to do so earlier. We arrived at our condo after being introduced to Dominican driving, We where dropped by our Island Buddy, who had previously picked up the key from the property manager. My wife was a little bit shocked when she noticed that the security guard was packing a shotgun. We where greeted by no electricity in our condo, but this was quickly resolved by a few words of Spanish to one of the security guards by our guide. She had kindly stocked our fridge with food including bacon and eggs, juice, milk, and a 6 pack of Presidente. She also made sure we where supplied with water.
What a thoughtful and kind women, and an awesome introduction to the Dominican Republic.
My wife and I grabbed a beer from the fridge and proceeded to check out the grounds, while our girls, unpacked. It was dark, and we where looking down on the ocean, about to take a short walk on the beach, when we where approached by one of the guards, who was trying to warn us of the danger. The young lad had a friendly and warm face, and was happy to share a beer with us. Despite the language barrier, we made friends and where always happy to see our new buddy Davie in the evenings.
The next day we had a fine breakfast, and the girls proceeded to enjoy the pool and the ocean, while I slept most of the day away. That evening our Island Buddy dropped by, and we spent some time getting to know each other, after which she took us to Blu for dinner. The girls where very impressed by the white couches, and sitting under the palm trees by the ocean. We ordered a bottle of Chardonne, some fancy drinks, including Pina Coladas, and I had a couple of Mojitas. (friggin awesome) The wife and I had Steak and Lobster.
I cannot recall what every one else had, but all where pleased with their meals. I thought that the bill wasn't to bad at about $150 US, especially considering just the bottle of wine would of cost around 90 dollars back home in Canada.
This was the most expensive meal we had on our whole trip.
The next day we decided to walk down to the beach from our condo in east Cabarete. It was about a kilometer down the road and quite an arduous journey, considering the lack of sidewalks most of the way, and the pollution and noise from all of the scooters. We walked down the beach on other days which was much more pleasant than the road.We found beach chairs in front of LAX, and proceeded to enjoy the sun, the rum, and the ocean. The kite surfers and wind surfers where a pleasure to behold, amongst other fine sights.;) I felt sorry for the lady with the fruit on her head, as she walked around all day, selling very little. The vender's did get a little bothersome at time's, but every one has to make a living. The girls made friends with a stray dog, who would always seem to find them, each day we came to the beach.
The next day the two girls and I went back to hang around on the beach in Cabarete while my wife went to an international women's luncheon, made up of ex patriots, that she had been kindly invited to by our Island Buddy.
The girls and I found an old graveyard by the beach that had rather rudely been surrounded by a new condo complex. It was something to see, that's for sure. When we met up later, my wife was very pleased to tell us that she had met women from all over the world, including an English women with the same name as hers! Despite the fact that these women where quite well off financially, they treated my wife with respect, and kindness. She really enjoyed her self.
This is just part one of my trip review, so please stay tuned for more. I hope you are not bored.:)
