I asked this question to Yolanda Manan of Aerodom on occasion of the backlog of storms in our area, and she replied:

Weather conditions in the local airport and destination airport.
Each airline has different standards to determine whether to fly or not. She explained that in general, the airline will see if it can fly around the storm. It this will result in greater delays, they may choose to cancel the flight.
She explains that whether the storm can become a hurricane carries much weight.

I am curious because my son is due to leave for Spain on Friday and he would practically have to fly through Ike.

Would love feedback from experienced persons on this topic.

I just went thru this with American Airlines and they will allow you to change your plane ticket free of charge, they called it their "Hurricane Protection Policy." I just found out about it on their website. Here's AA's policy, for informational purposes. Net SAAver & Special Offers - Special Offer Details

I called them and changed my ticket, no problem.
