hey everyone,

My Dominican husband (from Tamboril, Santiago) will be moving to London in November and I'm looking for other dominicans for us to meet up with. Also if anyone knows of any bars/clubs/restaurants etc that are good for meeting Dominicans let me know!

Thanks,

Fran x

I can't introduce anyone or say where they are.

What I can say is that up until 2 years ago, when I left the UK to live in Dominicana, the Dominican Republic's Embassy in London consistently told my Dominicana wife and I that there were hardly any Dominicanos in England as a whole, let alone in London. None of the Embassy staff ever offered to meet her outside of their work. We met one Dominicana in London in 9 years there.

There once was a sort of club or network set up for Dominicanos in England. the embassy in London knew of it. Perhaps it has re-started? I suggest you contact the Embassy when you get there. Don't expect too much help - they are usually friendly and can be responsive but the quality of service is about the same as anything done here in Dominicana (low!).

Of course one solution would be for your husband to go and sit on the steps outside the Embassy and chat to any Dominicanos that pass! :)

You are right there are not many Domnicans in Britain (500 born there in the 2001 census),

I know a few but most friendships are based on more than the country of origin. It would depend on your interests lifestyle etc. Best to integrate into London society and find friends there rather than be tied to some small expat grouping.

There is a club in Clerkenwell that plays Dominican music on Sundays - see other messages on this site.

dominicans in the UK

Hi

there is a small Dominican community in the elephant & castle area (london) - generally this area has quite a large latino community.

they hold a carnival in the park in elelphant & castle called "Carnival del Pueblo" every year in August. (this year it was 3rd Aug) its been a really big success & has grown every year. i met many dominicans here.

Carnaval del Pueblo - Carnaval del Pueblo London

there are alot of these festival days here in london though most occur through the summer -

29th June this year saw the carnival de cuba (sth London) & the 26th July saw the latino street party (Brixton) & in may we had a Brazilian carnival (in Angel Islington.).

check out "view London" and other sites as they have an online calander of all events......

hope this helps some!

Hi London_Calling.

Dominicana is short (an abbreviation) for the Dominican Republic (i.e. it's the tail end of La Republica Dominicana). Our problem here is that we (the Dominican Republic) are muddled with Dominica (pronounced Dom-en-EE-cah, empasis on the "EE") by many people who don't kno wthe difference. So locals call home La Republica Dominicana, Santo Domingo (the capital is often used as a synonym for the country as a whole - very muddling but a centuries old custom!), Dominicana (an abbreviation) or "el pais" (meaning "the country")!

Cheers!
