I'll be staying at this hotel mid October (on business) and wonder if I will be anywhere near expat places, if the neighborhood is safe, and any suggestions on what to do, see, etc. I will not have transportation.

I am a North Coast person and only been to the capital about 3 times and didn't get to see much.

Thanks for any suggestions.

The Embajador is a little "out of the way", but not very far from plenty of food and entertainment. There are a few good restaurants on the road leading to it, about a two minute walk from the hotel's entrance. One is Italian, one is Chinese...There may be another one. Within walking distance is the Bella Vista mall and in the opposite direction, Plaza Universidad. Plaza Central and Acropolis Mall are walking distance as well, but a little farther. The only expat place I know of is La Taverna, which is a 5-10 minute cab ride away.

There's also a "casa" called Tabu, practically adjacent to the hotel, strangely enough.

It's spelled Tabu and it is a "gentlemen's club" with working girls. Can't give more details as I've never been inside....just thought it was odd that it was so close to the hotel...

What's so strange about it? There are several "casas' on Pasteur a short 30-seconds walk to Intercontinetal and Melia hotels on Malecon, and also several casas on Indipendencia a 30-second walk to both Melia and Jaragua, and the whole pack of them is current to the Jaragua Casino... so what's the deal?

If your budget permits, I suggest you the executive club in Embajador. You will have free wired and wireless Internet, free computer use, finely appointed room with a DVD player, fruit basket, free beer and soft drinks, snacks (real food and sweets) throughout the day, full breakfast either in the main buffet restaurant or in the executive club a-la-carte -- all of this included

The strange thing is, unlike Pasteur or Independencia, the road leading to the Embajador is almost a driveway for the hotel. It is not a through street. The small plaza that it is in is adjacent to the hotel parking lot and there are no other businesses in that plaza (or so it seems).

I suggest you stay somewhere else, this place is what I would consider a "dump" and when you check out they will attempt to over charge you for everything.

I don't have a choice for hotels - they chose because it's close to where the conference is - and bottom line, they're paying. Is there something I should watch out for or specificallly request upon check in?

This has not been our experience with the Embajador. Our company has been using this hotel to accommodate overseas guests for many years. I personally have stayed at the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I agree. I have stayed at almost all of the "International Brand" hotels in SD and this was as good or better than any of them. Like I mentioned earlier, I was upgraded to the Executive Club floor, maybe the other rooms are different, but I doubt it could be so bad as to ruin the overall experience. I certainly wasn't scammed or overcharged for anything.

I do have one complaint however, the parking system...you have to pay at a window off the lobby before you leave...they give you a chip which you put in the machine to leave...

I was not in the Executive Club, so I can't speak to that. But, my room was old and not too clean.

At the restaurant, I had a cup of coffee and a yogurt. At checkout, they told me that breakfast was not included. I had the printed reservation that said breakfast was included and they said my travel agent made a mistake. I said fine, I'll pay for the coffee and the yogurt I had and they refused. They charged me $35USD for a buffet breakfast for me and $35 for my 4 yr old that just sat there with me and did not eat. The also charged me for consuming from the mini bar when I did not. I couldn't sit there and argue because I had to go catch a plane.

That was my experience and I would never go back.

Hi all,

So here's my report on this hotel. First, I have been there before. I'm embarassed to say I didn't know that the English is Ambassador.

This time I was put on the Executive Level, 6th floor, non smoking, king size bed (which I requested) and breakfast (free on 5th floor). Now before you say that it's because I was on this level - I was here at this hotel before and the service was excellent then and now.

Last time I couldn't get the internet to work and they moved me to 3 rooms and then had a technician come up and got it to work.

This time there were no complaints at all. As a matter of fact, the lobby front desk person asked if he knew me - and he remembered me from last time which was at least 2 or 3 months ago.

I did not have a car - so parking wasn't an issue - but I needed a photocopy of something; they did it. I needed something printed out and the business office accomodated me - 2 copies - and didn't charge me.

When I checked in they wanted a credit card - my room was to have been billed to my client - they let it go and on check out not ony room and tax but incidentals as well went to client and I paid nada.

So all in all, this hotel works - nothing special, but certainly very service oriented and pleasant. And I didn't see any hookers in the lobby but then I wasn't looking for them either.

Drro...thanks for the report/update on the Embajador.

As for the hookers in the lobby, I think that reference was about the Barcelo Lina (which I did see when I stayed there, well actually, just outside the lobby...by the casino entrance...and this was during an event in which the President was speaking there! LOL). The Embajador seemed very strict about non-registered people hanging around...

You're right about their strictness. In order to make the elevator work regardless of the floor you were on, you needed to put your key in. And coming down, same thing. i was on 6 and pushed 5 and it went to the lobby because I forgot to put my key in.

Made me feel safe and secure.
