Replace 888 with 881, it will be billed as a local DR call on your calling card. Look at the back of your ATM card if you want to dial them with a US number.

Yor other option is go to a call center/internet cafe with VOIP, It should be RD5 pesos a minute or less to dial a US 1-800 number.

If all long distance calls are the same as local calls (on a prepaid card cellphone) what is the benefit, if any, of using 800 numbers to call the states? It's my understanding they are not free from the DR but that even a long distance call is charged the same as if I were calling across the street.

i guess what your saying is its not possible to call collect through an operator with Claro cell phones.I have a claro contract not pay as you go cards.
Again is there an operator number with claro which can be dialed from my cell?

There is no benefit.............

........and actually, with a Codetel land line dialing an 800/888 etc number by using the 880 881 882 883 codes etc actually costs MORE than dialing direct..............

..........but some companies do not publish any numbers (and you can't find them on google or even by contacting them) but an "800" number so you have no choice...............

Thats my understanding and first hand knowledge of it..............

i had to call my bank (canadian) once from puerto plata.

the back of the card has a regular 10 digit number on it that said "worldwide collect".

i just dialed it & they answered...

If it is regular number, it will always work. It is just the 800,etc. numbers we are talking about.

I just perused my latest Codetel phone bill (land line) checking out the cost of the last few 1800/880, etc. numbers I've been calling in order to handle certain business details. They are billed at 10 pesos per minute! Half the time I was on hold!!!
