From Dominican Today;

"Santo Domingo.- The Interior and Police Ministry yesterday said the ban on civilians bearing guns starts Monday, December 1, and ends January 1, aimed at reducing crime and encouraging "coexistence without violence" during the holidays.

The resolution includes the definitive cancellation to own a gun for anyone who violates the ban.

The suspension doesn?t include the weapon's transfer from one place to another. However they must be stored and not be readibly usable."

Franklin Almeyda Rancier, the Secretary of the Interior Police and Ministry who issued the decree is getting a lot of "heat" from the the public sector.

In this scorching segment from Freddy Beras Goico, he tells the populace to do the complete opposite; to find any and all weapons and arm themselves against the criminal elements;

Do you feel safer knowing that citizens that legally carry guns for self protection are being disarmed when crime is typically at it's peak around the holiday season?

Could the bad guys construe the December gun ban as open season to prey on the vulnerable?

I don't have any assurances from the police that they can guarantee my safety to any degree, nor can I afford a bodyguard 24/7, so I personally will remain armed.

If you're not in the military or security business, and feel so endangered that you need a bodyguard or to be constantly armed (meaning strapped at all times), you're likely 1) living or spending your time in the wrong part of the town/state/country; and/or 2) in the wrong business.

Look, I don't question a person's right to have a weapon. We Americans are fairly big on that. I question your sense of need to be toting a gun. If you're that concerned about your security, why don't you simply spend your time in a more secure area? I'm not talking about being pushed out of the mainstream; most needs for a gun occur at the far-flung fringes of society, and you have to question your own judgment if you're spending most of your quality time there.

I mean, absent a very few isolated incidents spread out over years, it's not like assaults or kidnappings of expats are rampant in DR.

He is right

what's the point of collecting firearms from the one that has permits? and leave the criminals have theirs.

Main problem is that the interior and police ministry issued more permits to civilian than the army and police.

where is Leonel ? he doesnt talk about the problem

If I am to believe what I read in the newspaper yesterday, this is just another lukewarm fart into the air:
As I am led to understand from what I read, IF somebody gets caught in December carrying a legal arm, a mark will be placed onto the permit. Only after the cumulation of three (3) marks, will the permit will be revoked.
How many times do you get to be checked for arms in a month? :ermm:

Last year I nearly got shot (actually had a burn on one of my leg's hamstring and pants damaged) by some half drunk idiot wouldbe-tiguere waving a pistol in a small village during the crazy 5 minutes between midnite on December 31st and January 1st... really, I don't exactly WHICH year I had the pleasure.
Yes, I think they should disarm the general population during these "fiesta" days... but effectively. And most of all, physically disarm idiots carrying at fiestas and revoke their permit for life.
