In need of advice on a decent hotel in SD within short taxi ride from zona colonial in a $50 range for three-four nights for a stunning knock-out beautiful lady who wants to see the Capital and Boca-Chica. If someone has time and is kind enough to show her around the most important places of SD - it will be very kind and welcome. This coming week-end.

Thank you all in advance!

Try:
Abyta Hotel
Merino 309
Zona Colonial
809.221.2027

I don't remember the exact rate, but it's close to $50. The rooms are nice, interior courtyard and security door entry.
It's not on Conde so it's quieter, yet still close enough to walk the area.

I wish I had time this weekend to play tour guide...I love showing the CZ to folks!

I havent stayed there...but i took the tour and Hotel Discovery (right on the end of el conde and on parque indepencia) looked really nice. The rooms were pretty small tho...but very very clean and new. ANd they had a nice roof deck.

I am not officialy endorsing it as i have not stayed there. I probably would have stayed there if i didnt have a reservation elsewhere tho. I just like having a private balcony tho. BUt again...it looked VERY clean...nice professional staff...and the location (if you want zona colonial) cant be beat. 46 a night when i checked it out last year.

I concur on Venezia. Try and get a room with a balcony. There are only two. Overlooks the front.

i agree with bigbird (hi bigbird!!)...

the hotel discovery or try the green-house aparthotel. i stayed there for 2.5 months and got a monthly rate but i think the regular daily rate is $40 USD. its clean, safe and about a 5 minute walk to the ZC and el conde. i was a gal travelling alone and had no problems!

good luck and have a good time!

hey guys, i love the hotels mentioned here in this thread so i am taking notes for my next trip and adventure through the capital. one MAJOR concern of mine is parking a personal car in any of these locations? Is parking safe and or available with these places?

Hotel Venezia has a few parking spaces directly in front of the hotel. They also have a parking lot adjacent to the hotel secured with an iron gate.

The Green House has a few spots in front of the hotel. I had the misfortune one night of not finding a spot and parked on the street. Next morning all four hubcaps were missing.

jejeje...discovery actually looks much nicer in person. The web site doesnt do it justice.

THere is also the Mercure (sp?) on the other end of el conde. Its more pricey...but i've heard that you can get good deals there if you book in advance and on-line. again..one would be right in heart of the zona.

Oh...and to follow up. Parking does not appear to be good at either of these places.

I just got back from a 9 day stay in Santo Domingo. I'm a 30 year old male from New York City. I've been to the capital about 6 times and have stayed in a few hotels. Maison Gautreaux Guest House is the best as far as price and location is concerned. Right by the Malecon and the Casinos Intercontinental and Jaragua. Perfect place for singles because the hotel is guest friendly as long as your "friend" has I.D. I would not recommend Hotel Discovery to any of my friends. It's too crazy of an area, with the cars and noise and at night there's a nice little group of prostitutes right down the block. Yes, it's right by El Conde and Parque De Independencia, but the rooms are so boring and it just has this overall cheap feeling to it - they have rooms that literally look like closets and the bigger rooms are way overpriced - you can haggle the prices in this hotel but to me it's not worth it. Hotel Abyta is by far the best hotel I've stayed in. It doesn't look like anything special from the outside, but once inside, your blown away with the design and structure of the place. Upgrade to their comfort suite, you can negotiate a better price with Silvio the owner. He works in the morning but lives in an apartment within the hotel so he's always there and manages the place very well. The location is perfect, just 2-3 blocks down from El Conde and right around the corner from Diego Colons' house and the local bars. There's a colmado right across the street so if you crave anything at night you don't have to go far. Plus it's guest friendly. Tell him you know Robert Taveras and see if that helps, he gave me a discount since I stayed there a couple times before. Great place for singles, couples, family, can't recommend it enough. I believe the place is not even a year old, that's why it's not so well known - ABYTA HOTEL

Hotel Abyta

Bobytanmalo28- did you get a room at the Abyta with a kitchen? They say fully equipped but I wonder exactly what that means. I considered staying there but I need to make daily guagua connections at Parque Independencia and that is a bit of a walk from the Abyta, especially if I am carrying something. I was disapointed in my last stay at the Discovery. I also had some credit card theft happen to me after I left. The only place I used my card was the Discovery, and then only to secure the room charges as we paid in cash, so we are sure we know where, if not who did the thieving. I am going to try the Venezia next time but I'm always looking for good suggestions. The kitchen would be a big plus.

Discovery

Yes it is guest friendly as long as they have a cedular. There is also a 5 or 10 dollar charge unless you are staying in the penthouse rooms on the top floor.
