"Departmento Americana", located on JFK just east of Winston Churchill, is about 90% of a Best Buy. Their electronics department is very nice. They do have cell phones too, but, IMO you would be better of going to one of the big three's corporate stores and explain to them exactly what you need a phone to do. If you go to one of the satellite stores it might be harder to find a person who knows more about their phone other than just activating one.

No to department stores

The department stores are not the place to buy electronics, although they have big displays and assertive sales staff, their range is limited, as is assistance level from sales staff and after sales service is best forgotten.

You will find scores of cellphone stores all over the city but you often find only the cheaper end of goods, older models, remanufactured phones or Chinese knock-offs. Your best bet, as mentioned above is to go to one of the big cellular service providers to buy your phone - shop around. Again you won't find a vast range, but you will find knowledgeable staff, technical assistance for repairs and servicing and their after sales service is as good as it gets in this country (take that in whatever way you like).

For computer stuff, go to one of the bigger specialist stores. You won't find a huge range of laptops, just a few brands like Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba. Service and parts for other brands in practically non-existent and will mean sending/taking your laptop to the States. You will see whole-page ads in the local newspapers, particularly in the freebie dailies, but beware it's often "no-name" stuff with little or no back up. Your best shot would probably be one of the stores on Romulo Betancourt west of Churchill between Bella Vista and Cacicazgos, probably the best is CECOMSA who also have a very helpful service department.

Buying electronics in the DR is really tricky, if the object is not that heavy (Laptops) it is strongly adviced to bring those appliances from the USA, than to buy it here.

I just order what I need from the US for many items.

I have hesitated to do this for a flat screen TV because of shipping costs, the ridiculous import duty and then the ITBIS charged, but now that the prices have fallen so much in the US, it may about about that time when I can save between 30 to 40 per cent over purchasing a questionable unit here that is probably a refurbished unit. Since I live on the north coast, even the "more reasonable" places in Santo Domingo that only charge double the US price are not worth the trip.

Computers, by the way, have much lower import duties than most other electronics.

All info in the US says to wait until after Jan 1 to buy the flat screen TV. Prices are supposed to have a big drop.
