Katamarans/snorkeling

We are going to Barcelo Bavaro Beach the end of January. We have enjoyed snorkeling in the past even when we have to go out on an excursion to get to a suitable place. Is there good reef snorkeling from the beach? What are the best Katamaran excursions that include snorkeling? Other good snorkeling trips?

One message board contributor who stayed at Natura Park nearby reported last April: "The dives cost $40-45. Dive masters are a Dutch couple, Bjern & Alice, they are very nice and safety minded. Dives go at 9am and 1pm outside the reef for certified divers. There is a 3pm dive for resort course divers inside the reef. I dove on an unnamed wreck, and a new unmarked spot where the reef was much nicer. There are lots of nice coral formations, channels and tunnels. Diving is good, not great, visibilty sometimes not that great. Not a large variety of fish, due to the snorkeling spear fishermen you pass on the way out. Water temp 75."

Note that this underwater area may have suffered damage from Hurricane Georges. It is probable the excursions and dives will now take place more to the north where less damage occurred.

It appears that the area is fine for snorkeling but not highly recommended for scuba diving.

Thanks DR1. Is the final line your editorial of the post by the original message contributor? No katarmaran/booze cruises?

A catamaran/booze cruise is available for guests staying at Punta Cana/Bavaro hotels. The information can be found at the tours desk of your hotel. The catamaran will surely offer lovely views of the coastline and know where best to take you for snorkeling, if this is included as part of the excursion. Enjoy.
