I checked the suggested website. Nothing about Cuba, all about the DR.

The Cuban gov keeps stiff taxes and surcharges on all flights into the island.
Think of it b/c the flights return almost empty on the way out...

As the song of Hotel California says: You can check out anytime you want, but... (Well... That's for their nationals!) And to the detriment of the air service returning with 3/4 empty seats+cargo space...

Most Cubans holding DR's citizenship travel regularly via small planes and pooling in their cash to rent them with the entry/exit fees of Cuba as well.

So far the best way to visit Cuba (to my experience) is by pleasure yachting (or sailing)... Very few fees and wide open slots in all marinas.

From Cancun, Mexico there are 3 flights every day.
2 flights on Mexicana that cost $325 with tax (more or less)
1 Cubana flight that costs about $295-300 with tax

In my experience, all three have been full or nearly full both ways and about 80% of the passengers are Cuban Americans (who find it unacceptable that they can only visit their immediate family legally once every three years, and go under visit under the radar in between their "official" visits), or US tourists.

New Bill Would End Travel Ban To Cuba - cbs4.com

A bill is in the US House of Representatives to lift the US travel ban completely while keeping the economic embargo in place. Ordinarily, I would think that this bill would quietly die, but now that the political ideology of our 2 countries hasn't been this much in sync for over 50 years, who knows what will happen. It would spell doom for the DR. with a large loss of primarily all-inclusive package tourists. (Independent tourism to Cuba is considerably more challenging than the DR for the average gringo)

LOL!!! LOL!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really think that by having direct flights from the US to Cuba, the floodgates of paradise will be wide open in Cuba?!?!?

Before you see a democratic Cuba you will be 1000% a witness to China 180' to Democratic elections, North and South Korea reunion, Putin leaving power in Russia, Iraq becoming a role model of democracy (while keepin' in together as one country) to the middle east and Arab nations, Haiti becoming a hint of a nation and finally electricity 24/7/365 (6) in the DR...

You can play with the position of each event in the line up, but rest assured that Cuba is not going to transform into a butterfly overnight from the ugly larvae it has been for the last half century...

Huh?
Nowhere in my post did I imply that there would be any democratic reforms in Cuba. Its the US that will move so far to the socialist left that it relaxes its position against the dictatorship.

Cuba lacks infrastructure to support a 20% influx of tourists to their ports, hotel rooms, services, etc...

How do you propose they'll get the huge funds to invest into that infrastructure in order to be anything of a drag to the DR's tourism industry?

The DR has and continues to see billions of US and Euros pumped into the tourism industry's infrastructure. Where will Cuba secure billions in today's ruling economy to fund such large scale projects, let alone with having a gross external debt to European financial institutions as well as in the Asian circuit?

You really think that US banks will trample each other trying to dump billions in Cuba for the sake of a piece of the "possible" futuristic action?

Heck if anything and Cuba opens up to the US ever in the near future; the long list of firms waiting to lay claim to their ole possessions there, is ink and paper defying to the date.

You must understand that the US is run to protect and look for the interests of the US biz, not the let's all be friends in the world policy you may think of.

Cuba will need the better part of the next decade or two, just to bring the country into pair with modern times, as in development around the country to meet the basic needs for all and not by rations.

By the time Cuba catches up to the DR's tourism infrastructure of today, adding a robust economy much stronger than today for the region and world, the DR's industry will be on another whole level than AI or cheap weekend getaways for the US market. The DR is evolving into a higher scale geared tourism industry. One that can meet and provide for the most demanding and exacting clientele...

Things are not etched in stone and the picture could turn wildly for each country, but one thing I can tell you, is that the DR will find the way to survive the doom and gloom of that time if it ever comes to that. We're survivalists of the best kind!

Despite the alleged global crisis, Cuba welcomed 2.35 million foreign tourists in 2008. A record. I checked the DR Sectur website, and the DR had 3.9 million non-resident foreigners visit in 2007. The 2008 numbers are incomplete but it looks like 2.6 million for the first 8 months of 2008. Looks like there was a decline in tourism in the DR in 2008. One country's statistics are going one direction and the other one is going the other direction. Yes the DR gets more tourists, (for now) but Cuba is a strong competitor. The fact that they are legally prohibited prohibited from doing business with the largest economy in the world and still get 2.3 million visitors (and that Cuba's GDP is actually larger than the DR)is something to really take note of.
The tourist infrastructure is there. Yes, outside of the tourist zones the infrastructire is absolutely decrepit, but anyone who has visited the government planned tourist zones of Varadero, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo Cayo Sanibal, and Guardalavaca will tell you that the infrastructure is there. Many Spanish companies invest in CUBA (the melia and barcelo hotels, like all hotels, are property of the Cuban State, but the foreign companies get paid for the license and to manage it.) What they have managed to do so far without US investment is noteworthy. An article from the St. Pete Times tells about Cuba's massive tourist expansion.
Cuba aims to become tourist magnet - St. Petersburg Times
Cuba is throwing everything it has into tourism as it is the only industry in the past 50 years that hasn't failed.

Again, for the independent tourist, I don't think Cuba would be an option for everyone. But for someone who just wants to get a package with a charter flight and an all-inclusive resort in a tourist zone, lay on a beautiful beach, eat, drink profuse amounts of alcohol, go on tourist oriented tours, make passionate love to animacion employee sankies, and purchase some overpriced cigars, rum, and souvenirs, what does it lack that Punta Cana has? (besides casinos-gambling is illegal in Cuba) The Cuban all-inclusive packages can certainly compete on price with the DR. Lower labor costs, the fact sales tax does not exist in Cuba (no 26% hotel taxes), and less confiscatory airport taxes than in the DR.

The states need to lighten up. This crap has been going on for years and has hurt the trade industry and people huge in Cuba as well as other places. Cuba is a beautiful country with great beaches and people. We visit from the states but go via Montego Bay or Cancun. If American they will ask you if you wish your passport not be stamped. The US needs to mind their own business and get the chip off their sholder.
Just like the invasions of both Grenada and Haiti, truly unjustified.
