turtle tracking on the south coast
So EXCITING!!!!!
I want the T-shirt! I want to get involved! I want a way to make a formal protest in shops that are selling the tortoise shell jewelry. Is there some way that the DR1. Green Team could take this up as a project? It would be a way for tourists to help- if we got some great T-shirts made with each Turtle's name and her course, and info., along with encouraging the Environmental Department to continue this.... Anyone know of anyway we can help? I know that in Florida, they have lots of teams that go out and protect the nests.

you may have noticed the site for Grupo Jaraguas isnt working at the moment - I have been told its still in operation and will be running by the end of the week.
We now have a contact for who to inform straight away if a turtle comes ashore in an area that needs protection - apparently the cabarete turtles were notified so to speak by onnos and jems surfshop

Yes, i apologize for the temporary problem in Grupo jaraguas web page, it should be re-established by the end of the week. But feel free to email me any questions or info regarding sea turtles in the DR.
However, Im surprised to hear that "no one knew who to report nests in cabarete". We worked closely with staff from Ohnos (ask for Juan) and Jems surfshop, the Patronato, Dr. Naurio Tatis and others, with whom we continue to be in contact. I went there myself three times, with different researchers (Dr. jesus Tomas, Ohiana Revuelta and Andy Mason) gave a talk at the beach on one occasion. We even sent one of our volunteers (Erin Leline) to monitor the hatching of the last nests for a few weeks in June and she was constantly on the beach and talked to many people. Also, Antonia Marte from the Ministry of the Environment also went two or three times to follow the situation. We have photos and GPS points documenting the nests if you are interested.

Here's one, April 25th 2009 10:49 AM, on the top of a ridge 24 m below surface 1200 m from the beach between Boca Chica and Juan Dolio. Couldn't get any better picture, no piece of art but it's a real picture, these guys swim faster than a speeding bullet. It's probably a Hawksbill or a Loggerhead hard to tell.
