Hi again.

We were planning on sleeping a night in Samana Town so that we can be up early to take the 9am Whale watching trip.

I noticed when I was in Sosua, there was an overwhelming amount of prostitutes and their patrons. I can imagine that Samana might be much the same...and I don't want to really be around that (while I don't condemn it.)

Any info?

arggggg what is this obsession with everyone as if there is no prostitution in other countries - ive stayed in red light districts in sydney and amsterdam , these are the safest places due to the amount of people around lol

I dont know what these guys are worried about, but in my case if a prostitute were to cross my line of vision and or I were to look in her general direction for more than a split second my Dominican wife would punch me in the head.

So for me its healthy not to have any in the general vicinity.

Where is the real "problem" or danger.

As far as I'm concerned here is a bigger problem if you are worried about prostitutes. See below in article from the DR1.

The women need to feed their families and will never bother a husband and wife walking together in Sosua or Samana. A simple shake of a finger will suffice even if you are alone.

This is off DR1 web site. In case anyone wants to know where all those Dominican men learn to speak English. ******US returns 64 felons****** The United States returned 64 convicted criminals to the Dominican Republic after having served their jail sentences. The Listin Diario reported that the 64 were residents of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn and New Jersey. They had all been convicted of felonies and their return brings the total number of such cases to 3,165 so far this year (October 2003).

The sexual culture here is open and above board with no hidden agendas so you need to embrace it and if you want to ignore the obvious then do so. If you are so inclined you can avail yourself of the sexual pleasures available or you can go your merry way without partaking.

why not answer the question?

Hi:

Not sure why posters feel the need to project their personal opinion on a subject instead of providing an answer, but: My three visits to Samana provided the impression that it (Samana) is nothing like Sosua, not full of night clubs and or working girls or clients needed for them to exist

Samana is a very small "nature" oriented town where Sosua caters to the Ex Pats with a plethora of bars, nightclubs, discos and all that goes with it

From what I experienced in Samana you would have to ask a local to find a "paid escort" should you so desire, I doubt you will be bothered or even notice any working girls

Now I am under the impression that the member of the forum Squat lives in the Samana area – so – whilst its unlikely that you will see Squat in Sosua, you may see him in Samana!

( Im so funny this morning! )

Thanks for the scandal

Hey everyone.

Thanks for your various inputs. It never ceases to amaze me how travel forums often become a space to voice grievances or otherwise attack the person posing the question.

For your information. I work in the Women's Empowerment field. In fact, I have even worked for organisations that support "Sex Workers" Human Rights, so please spare me your analysis that I am just another "gringo." I am totally cool with women who choose to earn their livelihoods in this fashion, bearing in mind that they are not "forced" to do so, and it does not support cycles of additional unhealthy relationships or abuses. However, what is a "choice" anyway?

So Kyle especially, please get a life.

Also, and I hate to break it to you, but there ARE some things in the DR that people seem to get quite defensive over, when it is simply factual. While there is prostitution worldwide, that does not take away from the fact that there is quite a lot of it here...and NOT in red light districts, but even next to family restaurants. I am not saying the Dominican Republic is "worse" than, say, Thailand, but I am simply saying, it is here, so excuse me if I point that out. I am not trying to ruin your tourist industry (at least for average "gringos" like me) but I believe in honesty.

In Sousa I was disgusted, NOT by the prostitutes themselves, who appeared to be lovely your girls, but by the repugnant red-neck American boys, and dirty old German men, partaking in their services. THAT climate, is what I don't care to be around. At least not THIS weekend.

Another thing to be honest about, is the crime here. People also seem to get defensive when you mention "crime" in the DR, siting you as a sed. "gringo" and telling you that you are judgmental. It is here. Deal.

I must point out that not everyone that my looks like they are a prostitute are! I think its a style of dress thats caught on from australian and american soaps - young girls even dress the same in cold climates like the UK

I have lived in Samana for 7 years and while my reasons for living here are of volunteer and religious nature I would not be able to point out one girl and say for certain that she is a prostitute. I can on the other hand point out about 50 older men from various parts of the world with very young women on their arms and make a guess that at least some of them are prostitutes. If you visit Samana I can say that you will find nothing like the Sosua culture here.

If you have any questions feel free to email me by clicking on my name.

I love to answer questions and make sure that people have all the info necessary to really truly enjoy their visit to Samana.

You can`t compare Sosua and Samana. Sosua is the NO.1 place in the whole DR for prostitutes!

Samana is a lot more quiet and safe.

so sue her

i have visited sosua years ago and although i had a good time there it was a different thing then. the prices at the beach were ok and not high. their where areas that were posted with signs, no pros. here. now to me it is a trouble spot. the beach is more expensive all over but ho s thieves and lack of police helping. a downward spiral... :eek:gre: funny how life is a jewish settlement overun with german tourists and undereducated females practicing an old profession.

i am looking forward to a trip to Samana/Las Terrenas in the future and one can only hope that the "bug" doesn't reach Samana. from you are saying it's already there.

I am always a little sad that there is not more than one title for girls who rent out the use of their bodies. A prostitute always makes me think of the professional girls who do this for a living, some do it out of choice and some are co-erced. Others do it to help themselves through college or university, where some fees now are astronomical, others to feed their children where they have no job and no permanent man to help them. I wish there were another title for them. There appear to be both types here in LT, the former appear to be mostly Haitian and the latter Dominican. The professional quickly takes no for an answer by voice or gesture. Sometimes, however, the some Dominicans are little more difficult to get rid of as they resort to plain begging for 50 pesos with the story of not having eaten all day and their children are hungry. I don't know if my post contributes anything to the thread but I just felt like sounding off!

"I don't know if my post contributes anything to the thread but I just felt like sounding off!"

I think your post makes a lot of sense, and it is also a good way to sound off.

I agree there are many different reasons and conditions that create the various types of working girls. The thing is, often those reasons and conditions overlap, are not clear, or are obscured intentionally. Often it is impossible to tell which of those reasons and conditions actually contributed to the decision for any particular woman.

Also, it is often difficult to separate the truth from fiction. Many of these girls are very good at making up stories, or at telling only part of the truth. The real circumstances are not easily understood.

I also understand your point about Haitians. I have a lot of respect for Haitians, who in general seem to be very hard working and unassuming.

Of course, there are more than a few liars and crooks mixed in throughout the population of working girls, but most seem willing to take no for an answer, and are simply looking for the work, without creating any unnecessary problems.
