Permit to receive prescription medication via FedEx?

Hi,

I recently arrived in the DR for a six month stay, until the end of July. I'm on two prescription medications, one of them being Ritalin which is, of course, a controlled substance. For a number of reasons, including what I take the medication for (narcolepsy, which has few enough specialists in the U.S. I doubt there are many in the DR!), I decided that arranging with my father to have my medications filled in the U.S. and then FedEx'd to me here would be the easiest option. We had thought that all that was needed would be the proper declaration of contents of the package and photocopies of the prescriptions. Today, FedEx told my father that I would need to get a permit from the Dominican Health Department in order to receive the package. Does anyone know anything about this permit, or where I could find more information in English? I don't speak or read Spanish, so I'm having difficulty finding the information online myself. ANY help would be very much appreciated!!

Thank you,
Marissa

I do not think you will have any problem as long as there is no sign on the package that says :"Controlled Substance" Or you could have it sent to a friend in the states and then have the friend resend it in a "brown paper wrapper"....As long as the value is kept under 100$$ they won't bother you...as a general rule.

I would think so. I get lots of medications from the US. They are in bottles with the pharmacy label. I doubt that anyone in customs can tell one pill from another. If sent in a bottle a prescription came in and if the quantity in the bottle appears to match what is on the label, I wouldn't think there would be a problem.

In the US its against the law to mislabel a controlled medication. Just leave the pills in their original bottle and send them. For personal use its no big deal and no big amount. Just Fed EX it and 99/100 you will have no problem. BTW, I think you can buy Ritalin in the DR no prescription, no problem. I dont think you can buy Adderal. Why one and not the other I dont know but thats my experience.

Wow, Im surprised. Does anyone on the site know - I think you can buy Ritalin without a prescription here in the DR? If not its no problem to vist a local doctor and get a script.

If it is controlled you can't just go to a local doctor. You have to go to a doctor authorized to write prescriptions for controlled medications. Not all doctors are.

I'm not looking for a prescription though (which is actually not available here). I just want to know how to get the prescription I already have mailed here.

If your in Santiago , you can go to the ( I believe the health dept ) 2nd floor , Its been a while main street carretera I forget . Past verizon .
They can issue a paper for you to bring in your scripts . Controled substance . Then have it shiped to you DHL or UPS whatever .

Might be called departmento De salud publico. Middle of the street is a small park . HB should know the place im talking about . Copy of all your papers , couple hundred pesos good for 1 year .

I have prescription meds sent from the uk, I use royal mail, and then EPS from miami, Always ensure there is a letter included from your Doctor stating the drugs you take, and obviously the bottles are labelled correctly etc. Mine are always declared, customs always open the package, I have no problem, hope this helps
