I stumbled upon an amazing coffee shop called West Indies Coffee on Calle Las Mercedes #54 between Isabel la Catolica & Arzobispo Meri?o the other day.
This is a breath of fresh air along Las Mercedes Street and looks like it belongs more in the village in NYC than in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. I had a cappuccino and an espresso; both were excellent.
I sat down with the owner Jose Antonio Ure?a who has been exporting coffee for several years from the Dominican Republic.
In all honesty, the Colonial Zone need more places like this. I am hoping the gov't is telling the truth when they say that 2009 is the year they invest to fix up the Zona. The sector sure needs a face lift but I'm glad some businessmen are taking the initiative to open up shop.
