Does anyone know af a good mechanic in SD who can come to my home to work on some minor car troubles. So far the two i have had in the past have just completed half jobs then when searching for parts so they saw the better opportunity of just stealing the money and dissapearing. They seem to get all parts in the 20th ave area. i had accompanied them a couple of times and it is just a confusing waste of my day which costs me money, yet the minute your not beside a dominican and they have your money in hand, they seem to run with the relatively small money rather than completing the job and getting the regular more money.Does this surprise anyone?
Still a little shocked of these people, in the 33 countries i have visited including living in 4 latin american countries i have yet to see anying like the dishonesty i see in this country. Its unfortunate the policia and government do not care of the reputation and the harm Dominicans cause their tourists and expats. Anyway any refs would be greatly appreciated.

sad to hear that, but dominican rep. is one of the few country that you can repair you car for cheap. most mechanic will tell you the problem your car has at the moment. and if its some minor problem they will fix inmediately and ask you just for beers. it doesnt happen in USA. just find the right place. I always go to the same mechanic, he is specialist in mitsubishi. if that your make, pm and i will send you there. you can really trust in him.

I have a friend who does home call car mechanics but he usually works in and around Boca Chica, however it might be worth your while to talk to him. He speaks English, French and a few other languages too. His name is George and his celulares are 829 233 9478 & 809 780 2946. Tell him I recommended you.

Sorry, I am not near SD. I have over 15 years experience as a licensed mechanic. Class "A" Licensed in Ontario with interprovincial red seal, this just means that I am not backyard, I know my stuff. I would like to open a small shop helping people get their cars fixed "properly" the first time.

Is there a need an experienced and trained mechanic near the Sanitago area?
What would be a fair hourly rate to charge?

The mechanics here are refreshingly like anywhere else in the world.
I once took my car to the mechanic who kicked the tire, shook his head, tutted and said, "I am surprised it even starts in the morning."

Then he shook his head and said, "and I can't touch it 'till Thursday."

Made me laugh.

Do you want to work for beer as a canadian master tech? ;)
Here in the DR every men is a mechanic and they work for cheap.
I just opened my shop recently and I could talk to you about the "quality" and "level" of their work and knowledge. I have not seen anything that came from a dominican shop that was fix properly!!
Actually, most of the cases they f^<k it up even better. Well, as I said just started the business 2 months ago.
They have no proper diagnostic tools and tools in general -beside maybe a volt meter or a probe light - nor a torque wrench.
Just last week I replaced an oil pan for a fellow DR1 member because some idiot over tightened the drain plug with a force that cracked the pan.
Ask them about fuel trim, adaptation, CAN, VVT, CIP they will look at you like you are from the Mars.
They will cut any cables -including network cables- to find B+ for a POS radio or any accessory they try to install.
Few weeks ago I had a customer and his ex-mechanic cut a fiber optic cable on a BMW. It can not be repaired and the wiring harness cost only US$ 7500. They are using RTV silicon on applications that required Anaerobical sealer. Sure, the RTV is only $5 and the other thingy is $30!
But hey! Mechanics are cheap here!! They work for a beer. :bunny: :bunny:
The other things are the parts. While there are OE and good quality parts are available for pretty high prices, most dominicans are using the lowest quality POS parts ever. They are bringing here any cr^p that could not pass DOT, TUV or any other quality standard.
For this reason I get most of the parts from the US.
How about when they try to sell a used part for more $ than a cost of a new?
I really don't know what the f^ck are some of the expats thinking when they import their BMW, Infinity, Lexus etc... to the DR and they want Jose with a machete to fix it for 100 pesos, perhaps a beer?? Thanks God most are not like this and they know the good old rule:"you get what you paid for"
I'm not the cheapest shop for sure, nor the most expensive.
But after 20+ years experience in EU and USA, with ASE master and Automotive Consultant certification with over US$ 100,000 in equipments and tools I don't want the bottom feeders who are offering beers for repairs.
I leave them for dominican mechanics.
I'm sure there are good dominican mechanics also, and hopefully I'll meet with some.
Answering to your question: sure, there is always a need for a good mechanic.
I have sent you my number, just call me I'd like to talk to you.

Being born here and living here almost my entire life (24) I can tell you this about the mechanic guys in the DR.

1- They are cheap, cheap, cheap.
2- Are really bad at diagnostic, or if they don't know you will add more "problems" in order to charge more.
3- Never trust a mechanic to buy parts for you, if he is not a trusted guy ,80% of the cases is that he will charge you for a new piece and install an old one he has lying down for several months, probably one he took off of another car without the owner consent.
4- Aside from those problems, they are really good at changing one part for another, doesn't matter if it is extremely difficult to replace it, they will do it.

Solutions: So far I have approached my countrymen mechanics like this.

1- I make sure that I know what is bad with the car, make the diagnostic myself, if it is the axle going south I get sure of which parts I will need to buy to replace, If I'm not sure myself what is wrong with the car, then I go to several mechanics myself and ask them what is wrong. When 3 same mechanics diagnose the same problem then bingo you found it, ask them for the parts needed and then buy those parts YOURSELF at the repuesto (autoparts shop) with lower prices, (always haggle with the repuesteros); that does not mean to get the lower quality parts, just to get the best price for a good quality part by haggling and comparing between part shops. If the problem is a fine tuning one, or one that needs to work with delicate parts like injectors, then go to the dealeship of the brand of your vehicle (Agencia Bella in my case), in there I pay 1,250 for a full diagnostics with computer codes included.

2- With my diagnostics and parts in hand I head to my trusted mechanic guy (this is very important), and ask him for a quote to replace all the parts needed. After haggling a bit (loco bajale algo, yo no soy rico, ayudame) we settle at a fair price and he starts working with my car right away. I trust him for normal part replacements (Engine supports, different pumps, axle parts replacement, belts) but not for fine tuning like Fuel/Air Ratio stuff in the engine, when that happens (fine tuning) is time to get a new car.

I would of recommend you my trusted guy but it is unlikely that he will go to your home to work, unless if it is at a higher rate, is has the same basis as a "rescate" which is at a higher rate because the guy have to move outside his "taller"

I had my car fixed at TheHun's place and was happy with the service. You will pay more than you would for a Dominican "mechanic" whose only tools are a hummer and a screwdriver, but as they say, you get what you pay for. I highly recommend TheHun.

Funny stuff Liam1...the guy uses a "hummer" to transport his screwdriver.
