Hi, can anyone recommend a good insurance company, preferably with english speaking as I havent mastered spanish yet.
Is insurance about the same or more expensive in the DR than in the UK or US.

Try to talk to the mortgage dept. of some banks. Sometimes you will see home insurance fliers around at banks. Some banks have their own insurance subsidiaries too (namely Banco Popular).

I think the best insurance is to buy or build only after a very good evaluation of the land. Does it get flooded, does it get hit by land slides, etc.

Since most "quality" homes are all CBS construction, inside and out and have poured concrete roofs, the risk of a major or total loss may be much less than homes in the US. A CBS home with a concrete roof does not burn out, not does it easily get blown away. Once the above questions about the lot's safety are positively resolved, it may boil down to the risk from earth quakes.
So, premiums ought to be according to the risks.
