Hey everyone. Any advice for nightspots meeting the description above? I'm staying down the Malecon near Zona Colonial after spending a couple of weeks with friends. Many thanks! A band would be cool (maybe salsa influenced/jazz type stuff or merengue?), but not a necessity. Alternative would be a quiet, cool spot where one can hear one's voice.

Thanks.

You can try the lounge in the Jaragua Hotel/Casino on the Malecon. They have local live entertainment.

Yes they do, and they also have one of the most expensive drinks in SD and the environment is full o cigarette smoke so you will leave stinking like a dog

Any suggestions on where else to go?
If you want to travel just a little out of town, try the CHALET SUIZO on the Malecon going to wards Haina. Great Swiss-German food and beer, Saturday nights live music, rock, blues and easy listening. Usually not crowded and good atmosphere

The ruins at San Carlos (Right off the Zona Colonial) host Son music concerts every Sunday night. Not Saturday, but Sunday. VERY cool outdoor music scene. Think Buena Vista Social Club. It's one of my weekly stops.

Start Time @ San Carlos

Approximately at what time does the music start? I realize that published times & actual times vary. I would like to avoid standing 2 hours waiting if I could avoid it. In any case four of us will be there tomorrow (Sunday)

The music at the ruins at San Carlos start around 5 maybe. There is no lines. Get a chair and table if your early and lucky or just sit in the grass and enjoy. The Colamdo sells beer and drinks but they are a little more expensive than Colmado prices during the concert. There is also some food vendors around. It's a good time.

Also for dancing go to Sarten (I call it the old peoples dance place. Usually opens around 7pm. The weekend it can get crowded but theres still room for dancing. You can sit at a table inside or outside the door in the street for better people watching. Its located on Calle Hostos #153 in the Zone.

Also America Restaurant sometimes has dancing on Friday nights arounf 9 and on Sunday afternoons. It doesn't happen every week but there is a nice older crowd there. It's located on Calle Arzobispo Nouel #201 and Santome. If you want to check before you go to see if theres a band call 809-682-7194

It's San Carlos. Not sure when they start (8:00pm is a guess) they close it down about 11:00pm-11:30pm.

For quiet drinks plaza de espana is nice. As others mentioned jaragua has live merengue but drinks are expensive. To hear more piano bar type ballads the terraza at Napolitano has live music every night. There is a place on hermanos deligne about 3 blocks behind jaragua that is an older crowd and they sing baladas and bolero every night.

There is a disco at hotel santo domingo that gets an older corwd and has live bands on weekends.

I need to check out the cuban music. Sounds right up my alley.

For the record I was incorrect it is not San Carlos, but rather San Francisco as pointed out in this thread.
