On Mar 17/09 a friend from DR came to Kansas on a 1 year work visa. I have been trying to locate him his name is Robert C and he is 42 years old. He has not contacted his family in DR and we are getting a little concerned. He also has family in New York and Connecticut. If anyone has any info, I would appreciate some feedback;)

While trying to be facetious, I am wondering just how this fellow got a work visa.

Now, I know he could be math genius working on one of the famous problems; or he could be a major mechanical specialist who has developed new systems for maintaining John Deeres, but somehow, I doubt it. Just what got him this "work" visa...

It has been 10 days and he has not shown up. Do you think this might have been a ploy just to get a visa>>??? Gee, do you think>?

I certainly hope you are not on the hook for any of this...That knock on the door just might be the people from Immigration checking up to see how the job is going..

Conversely, it is really possible that he got lost at one of the airports on the way to Kansas. After all, it is NOT New York or Miami where he can talk to just about anyone.

Be interesting to see how this plays out. SO: Original Poster, please let us know what and how and why all of this is playing out, okay??

Since you included a ;) at the end of your post, I assume you understand at least a few of the possible scenarios.

HB's post #4 pretty much sums up the most likely outcomes. If you were a party who helped get Robert C a visa, you could be in for some legal problems if he is elsewhere, say Liberty heights, doing something other than what he should be doing.

If you are in fact a person who is unknowingly involved with Robert's entry into the US under false pretenses, you should take whatever steps you can to ensure you are not held responsible for any debts, wrong-doing, criminal acts, etc. that Robert might be involved in while "on the loose".

You might just be an observer to this occurrence, and only want to hear everyone's opinions, which is okay. However, if you happen to be a person who is actually involved, I think you will discover it is not a position you will enjoy being in.

Just to clarify, I befriended Robert C in DR 1 year ago. My daughter became good friends with his daughter and they do the Facebook thing and talk on the phone regularly on the phone. We were in DR March 1-8 and saw Robert C and his family. At time they told us about the work visa and his pending visit to the USA. I am under the assumption that his family(1/2 brother in the USA)helped him to obtain this visa. His family in the DR has not heard from him and wondered if we had, as he had our contact information. I live in Canada, and had nothing to do with the work visa, he did tell me last year that they have been working on getting hsi visa over the past few year.

Thank you for clarifying that.

I think I am putting my bet on his being in NYC. Hope he makes it. Seems to be a bit old to be gallivanting around looking for jobs --in this recession--unless he has some really unique skill sets.

I know that he has skills in the hotel business, he was manager at one of the a la cartes at the resort we stayed at. Help me understand, in order to qualify for a work visa, to the USA or any other country, would the sponsor not have to have a job already in place for the candidate. I am just curious, I have never seriously looked into sponsoring anyone. He worked in Punta Cana, his children live in Higuey and his mother in Santiago....I guess if they don't hear from him soon they will see him in a year.

Here's some info for you H2B Work Visa.

U.S. Work Visas
H-1B Work Visa
H-2B Work Visa

All foreigners who wish to work in the United States must first obtain a work visa. A work visa is a temporary permit to live and work in the United States. Individuals who work without the appropriate visa are breaking the law and may be deported.

A work visa may be obtained prior to entry into the United States or the applicant may change status after entering the United States on a different visa. Changing status from F-1 Student Visa to H-1B Work Visa is quite common among international college students. H-2B Work Visas are available to workers without higher education, E-3 Work Visas are only for Australian citizens, and H-3 Trainee Visas are available for short-term training at American companies.

What kind of work was he hired to do?

To be honest with you, I am not sure what work he came to the USA to do. I am under the assumption that his family helped him to obtain the Work Visa and they would have something lined up. As I said, we have not discussed to any length about his Visa, all I know is that he went for an interview in February and was told at that time that the Visa went through. His family in the USA carries the last name Tavara or Paulino

Have his family members tried to contact the family in the US? They must have a flight number, airline name etc.

Have the US family checked with the airport to see if he landed? If he is missing shouldn't his US family be calling the police in the US? Again start with flight number and check if he landed.

If In Kansas

Do you know where the job was, would have had to fly into either Wichita, or Kansas City. If Wichita, this would have involved another airport, such as Dallas, or Chicago. both have lots of spanish speakers working there, wichita not so much. from there would be a toss-up. but main routes from SD would be

Santo domingo to NY to Chicago/Dallas Wichita.
Santo Domingo to Miami to Dallas/Chicago wichita.
santo domingo to NY to Kansas City.
Santo Domingo to miami to kansas city.

Santo Domingo to Atlanta to Dallas Wichita
etc then you can always throw San Juan into the mix

As said above need the route, and did he arrive at any of the destinations

I am trying to reach his daughter, either her phone is off or "Orange" is having problems.
As you probably figured out I have next to no Spanish and the only one in his family I know that speaks English is his daughter the one my daughter speaks to. She has not been on Facebook either. I guess I will keep o trying...thanks for all of the suggestions. When and if I get further updates I will post it.
