and apologies if this has been asked before.

On our last trip, we noticed (have a pic somewhere) what looks like a cathedral or something? in process of being buildt.

If I recall it was between puerto plata and ? - sorry I forget the name of the town.

Apologies for the lame description!!

Anyone know what I'm talking about - even if I don't - what the building is and who owns it?

Thanks

You might have better luck finding that Reggaeton song that has "Duro Duro" in the refrain that they played at your resort every day at the Animation show!

i recon you may be talking about a house between puerto plata and navarette, very close to the autopista leading to santiago. driving from POP it is on your right, in the middle of nowhere.
it is not a cathedral, this is a private house. i recall hearing that the owner is little loco and he wanted his house, namely the roof, to resemble the pearls of architecture, so to speak, he has seen in his journeys. sadly he has not visited moscow for i feel this would have added some spice to already existing unsellable monstrosity he has raised to far.

geez, as you drive from POP to santiago, just before you leave old, nasty road to get on the main highway to santiago. on your right you will see this strange building. it is long way from POP, maybe 30 minutes drive.

i would say that one is in the process of falling down rather than being built - I presumed it was quite an old building, not that monsterous, more interesting I would say .If you want monsterous go up the road by the polce station in sosua lol

Either the "house" dv8 is talking about, (i always thought that house was Kremlin inspired), the new casino in POP or the new casino being built in Sosua, which too looks like a church.

I've heard from different uneducated sources, that the "Taj Mahal", as I like to call the abandoned megalomaniac structure between the tunnel and the cruce de Navarette, was built buy the orders of some nutty pelotero (baseball player).
Must have been a bit over his "bat"... there even are some old, probably not flight worthy airplanes sitting around.
In a country, where you sometimes almost have to fight chicas off yer hide, one never ceases to marvel at what some will do to impress them. :cheeky:

Thanks

JD - sounds close to what I heard. Now I must investigate to see which player - any guesses.

Thanks to all - those with useful info and those without

i am embarrassed to say that i quite like that monstrosity. very different from classic dominican architecture. and it comes with a big piece of land too.
the thing is, this is DR, if you ever want to sell - forget the imagination.
before we bought a house we wanted to build one and it was such a pain to know i could not have a house i wanted because we would never be able to sell it.

Don't feel embarrassed, I don't dislike it either... it certainly beats many monuments and other effigies like El Faro and/or other post modernistic BS-architecture buildings ordered by Balaguer.

Yet, the location paired with the architecture... erm... :cheeky:

There's a crazy castle-type building like that in San Juan de la Maguana that was abandoned during construction, apparently because it was structurally unsound.

you build what you like not what the next person buying it likes. everybody scared of design and worrying about the next owner. you think frank gherry think about buyers when he's designing his projects

cougar, no offense but this is an attitude of an old bat who builds his/her last ever house. or, alternatively, some rich bloke who does not care. the sad truth is, however, that most people move to bigger houses or to different area altogether. they also divorce or go bankrupt and they are forced to sell. not that many will stay in their first house until the day they die.
my taste is ultra modern glass and cement design with no bars in windows. but it would not fly in DR.

You really need to visit this part of the country, dv8. You'd love the complex being built next door to us - beautifully designed greenhouses.
