I'm pretty sure we'll never get to the bottom of this, but I would really love to know what idiot advised her to take this drug. From what I understand, the effects are minimal to none for a sport like weightlifting.

But it doesn't surprise me, as almost all the Dominican athletes I know who take PED's have no clue what they're doing, and their "advisers"(the ones administering the drugs) know even less.

From what I have read, this is a endurance enhancing drug, increasing the amount of oxygen rich red blood cells in the body. So if you are a swimmer, runner, decathlete, which require endurance this drug makes sense. If you are lifting a million pounds of steel for a 10 second burst, this is not your thing.

You are right. She is an idiot and her trainers are bigger idiots. But if you recall, she spent most of her time training in Eastern Europe, I believe Bulgaria, or an Eastern Block country. And only minutes before she was to compete in Beijing she was asked to be tested. She refused, initially, saying it would throw off her concentration. She conceded and took the test and went on to have a horrible showing. She would eventually blame the testing as having ruined her concentration. I think she was more jittered at the fact that she knew she was going to get caught.

I laugh....for those who don't watch Tele Novelas, sports are enough drama.

I have to agree with Mr. Lu onthis one....Training in Bulgaria was plain s tupid. The whole freaking Bulgarian team was BANNED fromthese Olympics for using banned substances... if they didn't cath here inthe Pan Ams it was because they didn't have the sophisticated testing devices that were used in Beijing!!

Duh!!!

Mr. Lu

but, in discussions of another endurance enhancing drug....

?It is probably less likely to be used by a 100m sprinter,? says Melia. However, he points out that one of the fringe benefits to the drug may be to overcome environmental conditions. ?In enclosed environments, like a hockey arena with lots of people, every bit of oxygen becomes important.?
