The Philadelphia Phillies have a new, young, Dominican (Hato Mayor) pitcher named "Antonio Bastardo". His fast ball is amazing. But is he, by transliteration, really a "bastard"?
I've never heard this surname before - in any Spanish speaking country.
I believe it is generally accepted that, notwithstanding that it is also the name for an inferior type of Portuguese wine grape, in Dominican Spanish, he is "bastard". How can this be?
