Hello everyone - I've been lurking a little while reading threads, but thought it might be helpful to ask for recommendations more directly. I'm headed to Sosua in about 2 weeks for what will hopefully be a laid-back honeymoon and am interested in what people would recommend to avoid or to do while we were there, since we're not as interested in the tourist nightlife.

So, for a relatively quiet and relaxing time - what restaurants, hotels, tours, daytrips, etc. would you recommend? We're trying to keep things relatively affordable as students, but don't intend to be stingy: safety and relaxation would be more of the plan rather than.. adventure and surprise.

I'd been thinking of some basic snorkeling or a trip out on a (glass-bottom?) boat, but I am not a particularly strong swimmer and we've been a bit paranoid since one of our close friends recently drowned while abroad. So recommendations for a place to go with a boat or better-than-average guides would be appreciated.

Thanks so much!

You must stop at Cafe Cubano on Pedro Clisante right infront of El Clasico nightclub. This is a wondeful little coffee house that also serves good American food. They also have the best Chocolate cake in town. Rod, the owner, and his wife are very nice people and the staff is great.

Besides that, I'll tell you not too drink too much and be careful with people trying to befriend you quickly just because they think you have money so that you can buy them something to drink or eat.

Have fun, I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.

Welcome back el Patron/Markf128, that was easy!

The Philly Cheese steak is good @ Cafe Cubano.

You HAVE to try the ribs at Rocky's...they rival the best you will find in the States and the atmosphere there is wonderful. Great people that speak English that are nice. Avoid the areas where the discos are in Sosua because there are many working girls there. I would visit the beach during the day and plan on having someone take care of you by offering seats, towels, cold beers and food....not too expensive like Cabarete. There are working girls on the beach too, but they are far more discreet. Have a great time!!

If you haven't been before, I would recommend a day trip to the capital. You can take the Metro bus (modern with a/c) from Sosua at a very low cost and they run from very early in the morning. It's a long day but low cost, interesting and fun!

How long would the Metro bus take to get to the capital? I think a day trip would be about the right length if the travel time isn't too prohibitive.

(And we'll have to try the chocolate cake at Cafe Cubano--I work in Philly, so I've got my cheesesteak needs covered :))

A day trip is way too much travel IMHO, it's a good 4 hours PLUS each way on Caribe Tours/Metro.

There are plenty of inexpensive hotels in Santo Domingo to crash and have a fresh journey back the next day.

Maybe our "pseudo french pal" will chime in with his opinions!

Ok, that seems about the length of trip I was thinking - I hadn't heard anyone mention the day trip as a possibility before.

I know several people (me included) that have done it as a day trip, as I said it is a long day. The suggestion of an overnight stay (I hesitate to say "crash" when discussing a bus trip LOL) is a very good one but will add a little to the cost. Perhaps one of our friends in SD could recommend a nice, low cost, place to stay!

Day Trip to the Capital?

A trip to the capital would be nice, with an overnight stay.

Just my opinion but a "day trip" would be too exhausting. You can get a decent room for $40 and up. Spend the day touring Zona Colonial, a nice evening dinner, enjoy some local live entertainment, hang out in the casino a bit and in the morning a relaxed breakfast.

This will be much more enjoyable and give you time to see a little bit of the capital.

Try the cafeteria style lunch at Balieys for less than 200 pesos. Balieys have great Dominican.
Try disco Classico, great club for dancing and since you are on vacation ask one of the girls for a Happy Hour. You will enjoy it.

By the way amusiccale, I'm sure everyone wishes you good luck for wedding. I assume if this is a honeymoon trip there must be a wedding involved!

LOL I see the OP is not on line so maybe a moderator could delete these last few before the bride-to-be reads them and cancels the trip or even the wedding! LOL

Why should posts be deleted, nobody was insulted or violated in this thread.

uh, right :paranoid: but yes, the honeymoon relies on the wedding as a prerequisite. I'm definitely leaning towards an overnight trip to SD.
