This new hospital/clinic is a great asset for the Cabarete and Sosua communities. The name was chosen when the founders were trying to locate in Cabarete, but they had problems aquiring the land so ended up building it in Sosua on the highway to Cabarete.

Like many expats, particularly those of advancing years, I have been concerned about the lack of a first class hospital/clinic near my home in Cabarete. I developed a hernia and was planning to have it operated on at the new Hospital Metropolitano in Santiago, but I decided to check out CMC that opened a week or so ago. The director of CMC is Dr. Robert Spitali, a brain surgeon morphed into an entrepreneur and hospital administrator. He has recruited a top staff from around the area. He gave me a tour of the place, including the two operating rooms and the patient hospital rooms. Beyond the excellent facilities, equipment and staff, the clincher for me was that they would take my U.S. insurance, while no other facility will.

It took a few days for them to nail down what they needed to claim directly with my insurance ( a process that no other medical facility I know is willing to do except when they already have an arrangement with the particular foreign insurer. I imagine once they've got more expereince dealing with foreign insurers the process will be reasonably automatic. If you can, bring a claim form from your insurer as well as you insurance card to speed it up. I went in for surgery yesterday morning. Since I had a spinal block I was able to observe the whole procedure and can confirm that that was a first class operating room and team. Where a lot of medical facilities fall down in the DR is the nursing and doctor attention that a patient gets once they are out of surgery. At CMC an hour didn't go by without my being check on by doctors and nurses, all of whom were extremely friendly (unlike what one might experience State side at times).

Ironically, since the hospital is brand new, they have not completed the lengthy process of getting approved by the ARS insurers in the DR. Dr. Spitali thinks it will take a couple of months to complete that process, In the meantime, if you've got foreign insurance, you are in luck.

I had the occasion to utilize the services of CMC this week as well. The level of professionalism, compassion, equipment and services is outstanding! I can't thank them enough for their help! They are to be commended for providing quality medical care to everyone in our area at very reasonable costs, even without insurance. I wish them much success. Judy, Las Canas.

I was given a tour by the man who built it. His children are doctors in the US and he was a civil engineer. This man is my hero - he's 80 years old!!! - D

And, remember, all their diagnostic equipment is brand new, every piece....as opposed to any other hospital on the island. Other hospitals buy one new piece of equipment at a time, when one is on the verge of being out-dated. They can never say that all are state-of-the-art.

I, too, had a tour the other day. I was very impressed by the qualifications of all employees, from the doctors to the technicians to the equipment within the facility.

And the cleanliness....I could have sat and eaten on the floor.

I hope that ex-pats and locals use this facility, respect and understand the quality of service they offer.

We all benefit when they do.

If you doubt, go and see. Introduce yourself. And ask questions.

Will they be accepting ARS Universal Health Insurance just case I get T-Boned on my scooter?

They are working on ARS Universal as well as other DR insurance companies, but it will be a month or two until it is all set. So the answer is currently no they do not accept DR insurances.

Would anyone know whether there is a comprehensive farmarcia attached to this new hospital yet. Mr. WB was prescribed 3 medications today when he visited his new specialist at Union Medica, Santiago and their farmarcia had none of them! We were told that the injectable Emprex 4000 would probably only be available from a farmarcia within a hospital - any help would be appreciated. We intend to visit the new Centro Medico Cabarete asap but, again, would anyone know in advance whether they will undertake some required blood tests which we need to get done on a bi-weekly basis?

No the new faccility does not have an extensive pharmacy attached. I too would check out Albeto's in Charimicos. If they do not have something and it is available somewhere they usually can find it for you.

Thank you for all the advice. I decided to telephone Brunita Reynoso, who is the well-trained and university qualified pharmacist who owns and runs the wecare. farmarcia in Ocean 1, Cabarete. She had obtained medicines for us previously and also arranged a rebate on some unused injectables which were not necessary when Mr. WB returned to the UK. She has been able to obtain the medications we need from her wholesaler and they are being delivered ready for our collection today. I would not hesitate to recommend this young lady for her expertise, helpfulness and great service with the added bonus that she speaks perfect English. She is contactable by telephone on 809 571 0045 or cel. 809 713 1335 or email wecares.a@gmail.com

Need information urgently if possible

Hi everyone:

I too am thrilled that this facility is now open as we vacation frequently in the Sosua/Cabarete area.

We are coming back down tomorrow and need some information: My parents are travelling with us and my mom has Alzheimer's. She's not doing very well and is at that stage where she is totally confused 99% of the time, needs constant looking after, etc.. The bigger problem is that she does not eat, except when forced (most times, for those of you that have never had a loved one go through this, it is because she thinks she's already eaten and thinks she's full. To tell her otherwise is like reasoning with a 3-year old), and needless to say she has lost so much weight and gets dehydrated a lot. My father is her sole caretaker and this vacation is a much-needed one for him. I can't even begin to explain how hard it is on him, how exhausting it is, etc.

A few times she has had to be brought to the ER here for IV fluids and I'm concerned that, if it happens while we're in Cabarete this week, will the new facility accept their Medicare card. Does anyone down there have any experience with using the Medicare coverage? Please let me know.

Also, please don't tell me that it may be best not to bring her on vacation. I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm not looking to be judged here. I just need some information. As I said, my father desperately needs a "break" and some R&R time spent with other people who can give him so time to himself and take some of the load off him. He's an absolute saint in my opinion and you have no idea how my heart breaks for both of them. I just want to be sure our bases are covered should she need medical assistance. Of course, we are hoping she doesn't but......

Please let me know.

Thanks so much

I can't answer about medicare but will your mother have travel insurance that would cover it?
My friend has recently had his appendix removed at this hospital and he didn't have insurance. The total cost was about US$3000 which we didn't think was bad and the treatment etc was first class!

My mom

No, she doesn't have any travel insurance. To be honest, we hadn't even thought about it. Stupid, I know, especially since they have always travelled extensively.

I should have added in my original post that she is otherwise healthy - has had all her checkups done religiously, blood work, etc. All comes back as A-OK every time. Additionally, most of the time she is happy as can be, fun-loving, sweet, and having a great time. She's adorable and fun to be with. What makes it hard is that we never know when these bouts of weakness will come on but when they do they really knock her for a loop. This week has been a bad one for her and I just want to make sure that, if necessary, we can get her help. I know that we can always take her to the hospital in Santiago, but to have something close by that accepts the Medicare is a definite plus.

If you should happen to need the services of the clinic, I think you'll find it very reasonable.
I hope you all have a great vacation!

It may be an idea to email CMC with your query regarding the acceptance of Medicare - their email is cmc.sosua@gmail.com and Mary Jo (wife of Dr. Spitali I think) is the Client Services Manager and very helpful.
