for all who can and want to help - on the 15th of august in POP doctors will see the poorest people who otherwise cannot afford medical help.
there will be free vaccinations for kids, AIDS tests, medical exams and treatments when possible.
this is a charity even pulled together by our farmacia and a group of dominican doctors with some help from the government, companies and private people.
if you can give us a hand too it would be much appreciated.

we need medical supplies of all sorts:
milk and nappies for kids
other meds for children (and adults): for fever, diarrhoea, cold
vitamins for mothers, pregnant women and adults
syringes, needles, bandages and such
other medicine: for heart, diabetes etc
you can also donate medical equipment from thermometers to those thingies that measure blood pressure or sugar levels

if you are a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or even a medical student and you can spare us a day of work it would be great.

those who do not have medical skills or much money can help with translating, setting up the place, taking care of people waiting etc.

please contact jorge luis brugal for further details. you can email him at jorge_luis_brugal@hotmail.com or call him at 809 801 2553.
you can also come and see him in farmacia dolores on avenida imbert barrera (close to the bridge above manolo tavarez justo next to bomba sunix) or call at 809 586 2427. jorge speaks english.

the event will take place in the school on that same street: casa albergue de martina, avenida imbert barreras, POP.

please see below details of this event (spanish only).
you can also PM me for more details.
thank you.

Wow, dv8, looks like a great way to lend a hand to the community.

I wish I had known sooner as I recently brought a bunch of medical supplies down and would have added this cause to my list.
If you know of anyone heading down that way before then from the Toronto area, I would be happy to be of assistance.

Good luck, I hope it is successful.

thank you for positive responses.
drloca: if you have anyone heading down to DR who can bring something it would be great.
mike: it was supposed to be a local event so we haven't set up paypal or any other separate account, i am sorry. i did not even dream that someone may offer financial donation. i will ask jorge what can be done in that area.
lambada: i will be home on tuesday, ask dr jim where i live :)
thank you again!

dv8...is this event held annually or on any regular basis?

I guess it is unlikely I can do anything at short notice but would love to help out in the future so please keep us posted.

this is the first time we are doing this but if it all goes well it may turn into a yearly event.
just a small way to give back to the community.

i also thought about another way you may help:
if you guys know of any poor family in POP area in need of medical attention, vaccinations, food and supply for kids - please let them know to come to that event.
hopefully doctors will be able to see and help everyone in need.
so go on and spread the word.
thank you.

... and after

i just wanted to let everyone know how it all went yesterday.
first i would like to thanks to everyone who made a donation without asking and without any hesitation. this money was really needed and we are grateful.
secondly, thanks to everyone who passed this message forward so that those in need could have received help. great job, guys.
special thanks to la profe who gave us advice regarding organization of the event.

now, for the facts.
it was a little chaotic but i think we can be excused - that was our first time.
we had several doctors working all day, mostly general but there were also few specialists. canadian and english embassies have responded to jorge's appeal for help by sending doctors as well.
CEPROSH was there with free tests for AIDS. we also had many volunteers including medics from AMBAR (ER service) and pharmacists.
people would see doctors and then show up with prescription to get free medicine. there were also free chicletas for kids :)
see some pictures below:

again, thanks to everyone who has helped. :)

Well done Dv8!

Will this be a regular event? (I hope :))

It seemed well attended and is obviously necessary. I imagine that a great many were helped that would not normally get the quality of attention they received due to the cost.

Sounds like a very successful day, dv8. Well done.

I also agree with Mike1. You should set up a permanent PayPal account for contributions, so that everyone has an opportunity to give to this worthwhile project, at any time.

I think a permanent name/address and a paypal account would be helpful for this event to raise more money. Please post what this information is. I am glad event was a success. Thanks for posting pictures and good luck in the future!
