Report on Panama, Dominican leaders’ “secret” deal wins a prize.
LIMA.- The investigative journalism which revealed a "secret" contract through which the Dominican government paid former Panama president Martin Torrijos around 300,000 dollars as an adviser to the Public Works Ministry (SEOPC) during Hip?lito Mejia’s administration (2000-2004) won second place in the Press and Society Institute’s (IPYS) Prize for Investigation of Corruption Cases.
The work by Argentine journalist Santiago Fascetto, published in March, 2008 revealed that the consultant's agreement began in 2001 and concluded in 2004, signed with Public Works Ministry, then headed by opposition PRD party president and presidential hopeful Miguel Vargas.
The prizes, created seven years ago by the IPYS, of Peru and Transparency International, award the best investigative journalism works on corruption cases in any country in the continent.
Fascetto’s second place prize is five thousand dollars.
