3G / 4G in sosua

Anyone have any info. on data plans in the DR?

I'm not talking about establishing on-going service...

I'm talking about tourist who visit having the ability

to use 3G/4G/Wifi.

I know in my city you can get a modem about the size a a thumbdrive
and take your 4G service where ever you go and allow up to five connections.

Anything like this is DR?

I'd be surprised if they didn't since they don't have the
infrastructure for land lines.

Really, the only reason I stay in a hotel is for Wifi,
but if I can get around this I'd stay with friends.

Codetel (previously Verizon) claims to be "the" 3G provider.
Centenial, which I seem to understand is now Viva(?) at least HAD 3G long before Codetel... I don't know what their status is on that.

For either you would need to have a contract with them with a new GSM chip and local cell number.
I don't know if any G3 providers have any bilateral G3 roaming agreements with foreign providers like AT&T.

WiFi? Well, I suppose you are looking for free and open WiFi access... some bars and restaurants and few hotel (usually NOT AI's) around the tourist and major metropolitan areas may offer it... some just open, others handing out a daily changing accesscode to their customers only (you dring-you surf).

I have a Samsung Instict through Sprint. Sprint told me that the phone would not work in the Dominican Republic. I also have a mobile broadband usb adapter. They aslo said that I could not get sevice in the Dominican Republic. I was in Puert Plata in July and was able to roam on the Orange Network with the phone and was able to connect to the internet with my mobile broadband adapter. Of course, the service is not cheap.
