Lindsey is spot on, you can book on-line and have the car waiting for you when you land!
I have booked on line through expedia. I have found Europcar to have the best prices for compact or economy cars. The agent at POP airport told me that my best option is to book through expedia for the lowest price and convenience. Another thing to consider is that some credit card companies,(master card platinum for example) cover your collision waver and any other damage if you use there card for the rental. What they do not cover is personal injury. So you can save quite a bundle if you book on line using a credit card that will cover collision insurance. I have done this at POP, Santiago airport and La Romana airport.

Being careful is not enough
Been there done that a few times. Tried to return a car to the STI airport from POP and sort of got lost. Tried asking for directions and almost got scammed with the escort. Luckily that didn't turn into a disaster. It all worked out in the end but was very stressful trying to find STI. Someday I'll take a trial run late at night when the traffic dies down. I know the people are all trying to make a buck but sometimes it wears you down. Thanks I'll check with the credit card company to see my options are.

I protest the fraud of $296.96 by Europcar/POP for charging me $296.96 for ''transmission repair!'' The terrible , worn rental car had
60,000+ miles and worn tires. A tire ''blew out'', costing me $75 to replace it. Europcar refused to reimburse me. The manager refused to meet with me. They confiscated the original contract. They refused a contract for the 2nd car. They refused any documentation as the 2nd car was finished! I signed a letter ''in protest''! They refused to give me a copy! This company is most suspect!

As time passes, Europcar/POP creates new charges
To attempt to justify their fraud with Travelocity and me: 1. They claim that i drove 6000 miles in 4 days--obviously not possible! 2.They say the car was returned with zero gas--I drove 200 miles and the car gas guage said 5/8 full! 3.They contend a rim was broken--ridiculous! 4.They contend that I ''wore out'' the car---the car was given to me with 60,000+miles with worn tires!---------------AVOID this scamster!

Whatever you do, DO NOT rent from Discount Car Rental at the POP airport. We rented from them last June and had to change cars three times in one week for problems we were having (power windows not working, no a/c, steering problems, etc). They were all beat up and not at all what you would expect from a car rental agency. The staff were also incompetant and made promises about the vehicles they were giving us that did not pan out to be true. We decided in the future that we would not pre-reserve a car and will instead wait until we arrive to see what we are renting.
