My girlfriend and I have been preparing for our 6month backpacking trip of DR and Haiti for some time now, only we awoke this morning and found out the terrible news which so many of you heard!

I just wanted to get some local knowledge...Some time during April or Ma, me and my girlfriend are looking to catch a bus from SantoDomingo to PAP ..we had wished to remain there for a week or so, staying at the Hotel Oloffson (some thing I have wanted to do for a very long time), hopfully attend a voodoo ceremony and meet with some of the local artists (I am interested in draps and voodoo art). We would also be willing to help out in any way possible!!

Is the above still possible ?

Does any body know if the hotel is okay ?

How would I go about getting a bus from SD to PAP ..any visa hassle with entering or exiting the DR ?
(My girlfriend is from Finland and I am from Australia, if that helps).:ermm:

Are you serious? They are digging the dead out from under collapsed buildings by the thousands, as we speak, and you ask about your vacation...

Maybe, just maybe this might be an appropriate question in a month or so.

Haiti is not where you want to go....and who told you they sold tickets to voodoo ceremonies? Port Au Prince won't be functional for a long, long time. Mexico is safer right now and they have Santeria ceremonies...and Mezcal !

I heard you could get a guide to sort out the voodoo thing, A friend of mine went to one a few years back..I do not really have an interest in Mexico...but yea I hear what you are saying ....don't think there will even be running busses between SD and PAP in three or four months from now ?

I agree it is to early to discuss this matter now.
It would be a little selfish to think about your holiday, when so many people are dead and is in need of help now. And I am sure the would need help from people that has specialist skills.

And first must they get food and water to their own people before they can feed tourists. Haiti has before been described as one of the most dangerous places to visit, I read now in the newspaper that they hear gunfire in the streets, I think could very dangerous to be a tourist in Haiti , when it is a lot of poor and desperate people in the streets and it can take long before things go back to normal again

Pledge, I'm going to close this and suggest you wait until nearer the time to find out what the situation is like in Haiti. It's a disaster on an unprecedented scale which makes it impossible to predict how long it will take for things to return to normal and/or what volunteer opportunities and logistics will be in place by that date.

BTW the Oloffsson Hotel is an old rickety building so it may well have suffered damage.
