Helping those in Haiti

My thoughts and prayers are with the people in Haiti. How very horrible and sad that this earthquake occurred. I am glad to hear that the all the people in DR on here are doing okay.

To help the Haitian people, some options:

Via Unicef: UNICEF - UNICEF Home

Links via CNN: Impact Your World - Special Reports from CNN.com

via Rachel Maddow Show: Haiti earthquake: How to help - Rachel Maddow show- msnbc.com

Also, if you're in the US or have phone access, via Wyclef Jean's @wyclef Twitter feed, to Yele.org (a real organization to help the Haitian people): text Yele to 510 510 and donate $5 toward #Haiti earthquake relief. It is legit, it asks you to confirm, and sends you a confirmation message.

Anyone on the North Coast wishing to help on a basic level....

Dominican Crossroads maintains a depot where we take donations of clean wearable adult and children's clothing, shoes, towels, bed sheets, and old suitcases. We will be packing up and giving out some of these items to Haitians who are returning to Haiti to give assistance to family and friends who have been affected by the Earthquake.

Already we have learned that some of the people we help have lost family members.

Anyone wishing to donate useable items can bring them to Dr. Bob's office next to the Coastal gas station in Sosua. Please be sure that items are clean and neatly folded and packed, so volunteers do not need to take the time to sort and wash donations.

Haiti Aid Agencies

I will send any help to the red cross.
The dominican branch is located at:
Calle Juan Enrique Dunant No. 51
Ens. Miraflores
Santo Domingo
phone: 809) 334-4545
First is an international organization, no related to any government.
Second they are already in Haiti organizing the relief efforts.
Third they do not have a secondary agenda, like promoting a specific politician, or a church organization (at the end your money may end up in making a new church instead of helping the victims of the earthquake).

Another type of donation that is really needed is blood..
Also you can do that at the red cross.

I came across this blog post on an international development blog. It has some good tips on how to choose which organizations to donate to after a major disaster: Choosing organizations to donate to after the Haiti earthquake.

The only thing that may be different for those located in the DR is the food donations. I don't necessarily agree with this approach, but having worked with Centro Bono, I know that they would not collect something they didn't have a plan for.

And here is a VERY comprehensive list of aid organizations (US-based) participating in the relief effort. InterAction Members Respond to the Earthquake in Haiti

I too donated to the Red Cross (the Canadian Red Cross).
And there was a drop down menu that allowed me to direct my donation to the Earthquake in Haiti fund.

To all my fellow Canadians, I wanted to share this with you. I just rean online (CTV News) that later today, our federal government is expected to announce that it will match dollar-for-dollar every Canadian contribution make to an International Relief Organization (such as the Red Cross). And the Canadian Red Cross had already received $1 million dollars by 5pm yesterday (Wednesday). If you donate whatever you can, your money will go twice as far.
