Extra seats for D.R. to assist Haiti relief, but nonrevs beware:

Delta has added additional flights and upgraded equipment to and from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in the coming days to assist the ongoing earthquake relief effort in neighboring Haiti, but nonrev travelers are warned that flights likely will be full.

Delta upgraded the aircraft from a Boeing 737 to a 757 between Atlanta and SDQ, and changed from a 757 to a 767 between New York-JFK and SDQ. On Tuesday, when service does not regularly operate, Delta added an extra section between ATL and SDQ, flown with a 757.

While flights to and from SDQ may show seat availability on TravelNet, capacity restrictions due to heavy cargo loads and last-minute bookings associated with the evacuation efforts mean that open seats for nonrevs are unlikely to be available.

Employees and Buddy Pass riders also should exercise caution when traveling to other cities Delta serves in the Dominican Republic, including Puerto Plata, Punta Cana and Santiago, because this alert may be expanded on short notice to include those locations as well.

Be aware that if the situation warrants, a Buddy Pass embargo may be imposed with little warning.

One of my not yet retired pilot buddies told me of a 737 leaving 6 non revs behind with 90 empty seats EWR-SDQ. Round trip fuel and belly freight. Used to be we'd figure a way to get them on....sigh.
