If Haiti and the DR are fortunate, thousands of jobs could be created in the reconstruction effort. These would be jobs for Haitians in Haiti, reducing the pressure on migration to the DR. Even, this could mean that experienced Haitian construction workers may return to Haiti for the jobs.

Former Dominican ambassador in Washington, Bernardo Vega comments on this situation in dr1 daily news:
DR1 - Daily News Wednesday, 20 January 2010
Vega focuses on how Haiti will need to buy practically everything new and this will require supplies and lots of good jobs could be created. There will be opportunities for lots of imports too.
There will be opportunities for many to do business in Haiti. The tragic story of those who died and the catastrophe will move on to one focusing on the efforts to restore Haiti.

i wouldn't mind going down next winter for reconstruction efforts. i am a journey man carpenter that specialised in form work. large commercial concrete is my thing. would love to help rebuild

i think its too early right now and dangerous. would rather let the dust settle before looking for groups hiring for the reconstruction

I think there could be a good market down there for converting shipping container into housing. They are $1000 FOB US and Haitians are very good with welding. The big plus is they are earthquake proof.

Haiti might be able to start from scratch and build new infrastructure. A brand new PAP! That way everyone will want to go there and invest in that wonderful country.

You would prob pay about $2000 for the shipping, but you could fill it with goods. Also there is very likely to be a surplus of containers in Haiti until they can start exporting again.

They have giant fork lifts they can use to offload these from a flatbed truck. I'm sure there are 100s of extras lying around any port in the DR too.

Before they even think about rebuilding, they still need to put in potable water systems and sewage. So many times they dig one trench for both which leads to the water system being contaminated by the sewage. There are plenty of places in Sosua where you can see the municipal water leaking. When it loses pressure the sewage can leak into it through the breaks.

Realize that PaP is about the size of Chicago. It is not going to be a small project. I'm with Wyclef in saying about 2 million need to move back to the countryside.

Royal Caribbean daring decision

Royal Caribbean chose not to detour from its port in northern Haiti and to make its weekly shop at Labadee. This is a controversial and brave decision. I think they can do more good making the stop and bringing relief supplies and maintaining the ties. This is a ship that makes multiple stops so the choice of the ship just bringing relief was not an option. I am sure activities could be organized on board and passenger fund raisers held that would support Haiti. One has to remember that infrastructurewise it is likely the north coast was untouched, as has happened to the DR.

In my opinion, the cost of the ship not coming would have been greater to Haiti. I think this is one of the decisions that had to be taken and is part of the rebuilding of Haiti. For sure, creativity can be used so that every passenger coming to Haiti can make a special contribution and help build a new Haiti.

Haiti needs all the support it can get in rebuilding.

Yep, dumping a couple thousand tons of brickettes made in the US every year would have been a great idea about 25 years ago before they cut all the trees down. Things are so bad now for firewood they are mining tree roots to make into charcoal. They have had all kinds of programs trying to plant new trees and they either get eaten by goats or cut down and stolen for charcoal production. Propane isn't affordable to the vast majority of the population.

This is standard living for several Americans so why is this not good enough for whatever half of Hispanola you decide to live in.

If you remember the story of the 3 little pigs and the big bad wolf, then a Container Condo with no monthly fees or Property Management Fees that cannot be blown away...no matter how much you Huff & Puff and all that Stuff....

There is already one in Sosua next to the Huge Nursery.

I will now inquire about container housing...however this must be done on flat ground because if we put these Mobile Homes On A Hill.....

Those are interesting articles on rebuilding. I wonder if they will rebuild PaP or develop elsewhere. Since I've never visited and I don't know what has survived the quake, I have no opinion on whether it's a good site to rebuild. Maybe it just takes better construction techniques. In the meantime, it appears people are leaving for other parts.

There will be a meeting in Montreal with heads of state, UE, Caricom, UN, IMF and others. As well as a parallel conference of Aid organizations hosted by the Canadian government. In April they'll meet in the Dominican Republic for a strategic planning meeting. I really hope this will lead to sustainable development and that it will be really good for the DR as well. It should stimulate the economy, in my opinion.

Some people (IMF) are referring to the strategic plan as a Marshal Plan for Haiti. Dominique Strauss-Kahn: Why We Need a "Marshall Plan" for Haiti

Have you been inside a container when the temperature goes up to the 40 C. degrees???
Do you have an idea of how much $$$ you need to insulated one of those???
