Traveling-The big question?

Okay I do not want to sound ignorant but I honestly can not grasp some of these "laws" or whatever they are. Okay so the Dominican Republic is not a communist country. Correct? Okay so what is the big deal with them leaving? I know that from anywhere it is hard to get into the United States, but the US makes it hard not the other country. In the case of DR, their laws prohibit them or make it extremely hard for them to leave. Why is this? Why can't they just apply for a passport or visa and wait a few months and do it like other places? At least like Europe. Okay so if it is not a communist country it is definately not a free enterprise(democracy) so that makes it socialist? And how would that be because that is what most of Europe is and they can leave their country, at least to travel. And to me this is a big issue. No maybe not many have the money to travel but at least to have the freedom to be able to-why is this not a concern of the people? And if it is why is the president promising motorcycles and not freedom to travel and make a better life?

It is not the Dominican government that is limiting travel - it is other countries that are denying visas to Dominicans.

For both quite easily, with the money and the credentials (and passports don't take a few months either).

Whether they can GET a visa is a different story but ther are countries they can travel to without one. Sort of screws up the premise a bit I'd say.

...which countries allow Dominicans without visas?

Argentina, Chile, South Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Peru, Liechtenstein, Uruguay, Cuba and Curacao off the top of my head.

That list may have changed over the past 2-3 years. Best to check with your local consulate etc.

Not true. A Dominican cannot leave the D.R. without permission and a Passport. Ever wonder why you have to go through immigration when Leaving the D.R.?

I could be wrong but isn't far easier to obtain permission and a passport from the Dominican government than it is to get a visa to visit another country?

Easier maybe for some. The average Dominican does not have a passport nor are they able to obtain one.
Just look at the list of countries that do not require a Visa for Dominicans. If a passport was easy to obtain and the D.R. allowed free travel don't you think there would be a major flight of people leaving for Greener pastures?

Did you know that a Private citizen in the D.R. can legally prevent another person from leaving the country? It is called and inpediment of exit. All one has to do is claim that person owes you money(Lawsuit for example) and that person will be refused exit at the airport. Compare that to the US where the only way a person can be refused exit is due to a Criminal Case. (Out on Bail, probation, a arrest warrant ect.)

I believe all a Dominican needs is a birth certificate and a cedula to apply for a passport. Of course they also need the money and be able to physically visit the office. They also offer a fast track system for people applying for the first time. I hear it's very quick to get a passport these days.

It's one thing having a passport, it's another thing having the money to buy a ticket. Plus it's even harder these days for Dominicans if they need to transit via the USA.

"inpediment of exit" just like it can be applied it can be lifted.
It comes down to who you know and money.

As Stephen points out, sometimes the amount of misinformation is ridiculous.

And it is generally the same 2 or 3 people doing it Robert! I think the agenda in this case is "Why link FACTS with the TRUTH when misinterpreting the truth is so much more misleading"!! We have seen this on so many other threads this poster has contributed to, that we - who have gotten used to his garbage of misinformation - now tend to pass him by!! THANK you for setting the record straight.

I believe another "Problem" that precludes a Dominican getting his/her passport is a valid Birth Certificate. These can be quite time consuming (& expensive) to get especially when true 'Father' is not always known. - Grahame.

Is this true?

What is this "permission" requirement and how do you go about getting it? If one has a passport, does that imply that they have "permission"?

I don't think Hong Kong no longer allows Dominicans without a visa. The reason I'm saying this is because, technically, Hong Kong now belongs to China. Since absolutely everybody (even Americans and Europeans) need a visa to go to China, I would assume the same would apply for Hong Kong, being a official chinese territory and all.

How was that list of countries compiled? (by searching every countries' embassy website?) Is it published somewhere? I know that Venezuela requires a visa for Dominicans.

To travel to Venezuela, Dominicans do need visas. At the Venezuelan Consulate we were told it costs US$30. We would appreciate if SKY could provide us the source of his list, as had never seen such a complete one, although some places may require visas, such as is the case of Venezuela.

Mis-Information?

Ok Then if I am wrong why do Dominicans need to go through a Immigration to leave the country? By having this check it is implied that one needs permission from the D.R. Government to leave.
In the US nobody has to go through any type of Goverment Check to leave.
