The Senate Plenary approved, on Thursday (8), the Legislative Decree Project (PDL) 78/2020, which ratifies the text of the agreement between Brazil and the Dominican Republic on exemption from tourism and business visas. The agreement was signed in Brasilia, on May 14, 2018. This draft legislative decree is now underway for promulgation by the National Congress.

For the rapporteur of the matter, Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC), the agreement is important because it makes the exchange between the two countries more agile by no longer requiring a visa in passports. According to him, the document follows the pattern of other visa-free instruments signed by the Brazilian government and approved by the National Congress.

According to the agreement, authorization will not be required to enter, stay, transit and leave these two countries for tourism and business purposes. This exemption is valid for periods of up to 60 days, provided that the total period of stay does not exceed 120 days per year, counted from the first entry. However, the visa waiver does not exempt a country from the obligation to comply with the laws and regulations in force regarding the entry, transit, stay and departure of foreigners in the territory of the other nation.

Each country retains the right to refuse entry or reduce the stay in its territory of anyone it considers undesirable. The text also maintains the hypothesis of partial suspension of the instrument in cases of national security, public order or health protection, with the necessary notification to the other country.
