FYI
Canada Customs and Revenue Agency have been in Sosua for the past three weeks asking all kinds of questions ( with the written permission of the local gov) tracking down Canadians living and making money here in DR and not claiming it on their respective taxes.

oh ya!

I think I saw them they stick out like a sore thumb- 10 guys walking around with Calculators, Parkas, and Snow Shoes. They are a dead give away too with their name tags on and "I love Canada" brief cases.:lick:

Funny thing

My dad has not lived in Canada for 4 years, yet revenue Canada say's he owes $9,000 in unpaid taxes for 2003 and 2004. Whatever, he's never coming back so they can stick it. They will never find him in his homeland anyway;)

Since taxes are based on residential status and not Canadian citizenship, it strikes me odd they think that everyone is bilking the Canadian government of tax revenue.

Taxes are based on world wide income and any taxes paid in other countries would generate a tax credit on the Canadian side.
It sucks !
I would rather see they go after those individuals recieving unemployment insurance while spending their winter in DR. But again, if that would happen Caberate would loose allot of business.

whats even Worse!

I am self employed through an incorporated company and I pay very hi UIC premiums(unemployment Insurance) . Because I am self employed I don't have the luxury of quitting my job and collecting UIC even though I pay into it. I cant even qualify because I am self employed.
I am the only employee of my incorporated company so I also pay double the amount for Canada Pension Plan(twice as much as someone who is just an employee). 47% of every dollar I make go's to taxes. But I recieve the same crappy medical care as the next guy in line, taxes buy you nothing extra.
Obviously you have to pay taxes in Canada, and it pays for roads and services and basic medical care.
Now lets say(God Forbid) I get sick, and need to see a specialist right away for an MRI or something like that. I who paid 100% more tax because of my income bracket, as opposed to the bum* sucking off the system who is on welfare for no good reason receives the exact same medical services as me.
I would be on the same waiting list as him. In other words, by paying more tax buys me absolutely NOTHING! Canada is an impossible Country to build real wealth in. The HARDER you work the more you are penalized.

* I do realize that there are real people that need to be on welfare and UIC and I am not talking about the poor unfortunates that work hard or are honest. I am a compassionate person that believes in charity.
But I dont like the tax system in Canada. But there is not much I can do.

Gee, at least you get health care for your tax dollars. You could be one of the 50 million Americans (middle income earners being the largest group) without health insurance.

Howmar the health system in Canada is not all its cracked up to be.
Personally I would prefer what's called a "two tier" system. A mixture of socialized health care and the option to pay for it to speed up service. For example if I need an MRI in Canada I most likely would have to wait 2 or 3 months, or even longer before I could get one. But with privatized medicine I might be able to get one next week? Correct me if I'm wrong but in the USA do you have to wait several months for these types of procedures.

And I agree with you about its unfortuante that 50 million people dont have health insurance.

If you understand triage you would understand a MRI wait. I had a CT scan the same day (same hour once) three times and an MRI done in 4 days after the doctor decided it was important.

They are based on WW income only IF you are still a resident of Canada, unlike Ameicans who pay based on their citizenship no matter where they live. If you are a DR resident and have left Canada you pay no Canada income taxes. If you are trying to pretend to be a resident to keep health insurance (which runs out even if you don't give up residence once you are out of Canada for a while) then you should pay taxes and not be a mooch.

u i premiums

you need a new accountant!!!!! what type of one man corporation is that!!! ccra is in sosua because somebody took home too much brugal with duty not paid. the liberals have some make work project for some volunteers from their children and they sent them to sosua to recover the $20.00 cdn owed on duty(value for money). back to your business, the only reason i could see that you would employ yourself is to scam ui(really ei). an rsp is a better deduction on your taxes if you truly are a taxpayer. there are caps on the amount of ui a person can claim based on income and thet 47% bracket doesn't apply. i own a concrete business with employees and my wcb is 15,000 a year alone and i'm still not taxed at a 47% rate and i don't qualify for any perks other than high taxes!!!!

p.s. there could be a few certain places i have seen in sosua that could be just fancy laundry mats.

Any absence from the country(Canada) is view as you being unavailable for work, and would adjust your UI payments accordingly (or come after you to pay it back). HRDC and CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) database are linked and is hard to fool them.

Maybe they are looking for a Moonshiner, up on the hills of Cabarete who forget to pay taxes on exit. LOL

This is true unless you are collecting a government pension of any kind, even if you are a Dominican resident, the Canadian government will take 25% taxes before you even see it. You then have to file a Canadian income tax return(special form as a non-resident). You then might receive a return.

I think for the most part the CDN system is pretty fair. I feel sorry for those that do not push their doctors when things go wrong. People have to get really aggressive when it comes to their health but they have to be responsible too.

Absolutely nothing, yet you still vote for the party that you end up bithcing at !
You, ( the American populas) voted for a president that was closer historical ties to Bin Ladden, Hussane then anyother government, And, when things did not go your way you decided to take whatever action deemed appropriate.
