Nice poetry, XR. FYI: the verb "evaporate" refers to "flurry" not to "words". This means that it should be singular, not plural. No charge.

3rd world is 3rd world

Could the real problem be that when you have nothing to start with you never see getting anything. The difference between dirt poor and a decent standard of living is far enough it seems overwhelming. With in my family here in the states we have rich and poor people and in between and all of them are due to choices they make but they are choices that have real consequences that can be seen.
Just as in the states the easiest way of increasing lifestyle with out increasing income is to spend conservatively. Buy big-ticket items over time. But why buy big-ticket items rather than buy beer. The beer is gone as soon as you use the toilet but the washing machine gets stolen when you go to work by your next-door neighbor.
Why work hard for $200 a month when your Primo makes that in two days in New York. When I was in the Philippines myself and three other sailors sponsored a family with a business. We bought some chickens and set them up. They had an income of around $5 a day from the chickens but someone in the family got sick so the sold the chickens for about what they made off of them in a month normally. No concept of long term. They only lived for the moment.
I can see the same in the D.R. I have not spent a-lot of time there yet. I have been watching the board and talking to people there all the time. I see the same mentality as in the Philippines.

Don't you get it, it is not about who they talk about, it's about them . . . .

there is no reason to have sympathy or understanding for these "noble savages", yes I say noble savage, in the sense you must understand these people are very insecure, an once they move to the DR thier insecurity only increases. They intentionally pick out a community that has not had the benifits that they had growing up in first world countrys and they look around, they verbally dump on the native population and see they can convince themselves that they win the argument and in thier minds they see, it is good. Nothing like a poor local population to dump on when you feel insecure right guys? But you might ask, "well if that's thier game, why not just go to Haiti or Ethiopia?". Well if they went there, thier game would be laid bare, they would be seen as pathetic people who need to put some one else down to feel big about themselves.

as Robert says . . . . .

You might dump on CC, but he makes a difference. He supports a great number of people, directly and indirectly. He educates, contributes and make a difference for many peoples lives.

. . . and you fail to mention that he does it with bitterness and maglignant hate because he feels his wifes family deserves none of it, for all I know, maybe they don't , but as long as CC is giving handouts . . . . . .

Just to clarify,

Nobel Savage: One who origionates from a family or society of privledge wether they deserve it or not ( the Noble part) and who uses that as a proof of there superiority to those who had no opportunity (either growing up or currently) (the Savage part).

people like this, like to surround themselves with the poor, it makes them feel big.

On the lighter side, this is not a major defect, all people have defects, it's just that this subject seems to nail the defect on the head, so it must be discussed.

Great post. I like when people do their research when making a point instead of blind emotional chatter.

I also don't beleive that people who live there to start businesses are hiring locals out the kindness of their heart or with the idea of trying to make a change in DR.

Also

When you travel enough around the world and witness poverty. The psycology of poverty is not much different. It just seems people think it is a Dominican thing.

Bullfeathers!

You know, you're both just stupid. Not ignorant of the real world. Just plain old stupid.

How many people have you hired? In the DR? In your lifetime? How many people do you hire 'to make a difference?' All of the people I hire are my friends. Real friends. Probably another subject you have no experience in. How many other countries have you lived in to witness this 'poverty' you know so much about? I've lived in India, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, and now the Dominican Republic with extensive time spent in other countries such as Pakistan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Zimbabwe. Andyou Mr. Know-It-All? Name 'em or shut up. How much acclaim do you have in your home country? You can look me up in any Who's Who you choose to see my record.

It's insulting to have some know-nothing telling me what I am all about when they have no idea who I am. Look it up fool, and confine your remarks to the subject at hand if you're able? You don't know jack about psychology or what's in someone else's head. Hell, you don't have a clue about what's in your own head, or how to express it. You have aboslutely no right to speculate. That's just plain insulting and I think you're both acting like whiney clueless little spoiled children.

Grow up.

Tomk (aka XR)

P.S.
I repeat: The answer to success for anyone is hard work and perserverence. Not sticking your hand out and waiting for someone to put something in it. That applies to Dominicans, Americans, Malaysians, LTSnyder, Sancochojoe, in-laws, and blood relatives if they behave that way. I am not wealthy, I work for a living and I'll be damned if some lambone is going to make me feel bad that they have nothing but choose to spend the day drinking Brugal and playing Dominoes. I do not have respect for anyone who whines about their lot in life and waits for someone else to fix it without making an effort on their own - beyond begging. That is not directed at poor people. It is a prime reason I left the U.S. too, because too many people there have learned that it is easier to beg than to work for your dreams, no matter how modest those dreams are, from folks like you. That's sad.

another tiger backed in the corner again......name calling?

oh, and do I hear Nepatism.....isn't that a form of unearned handouts.

Look if you been there before, than act like you been there before. People who've been their don't need to get angry and try to prove how much you've done. Obviously there is a lack of humilty in your heart. Your a guy that sound like you want a street sign named after you so people are forced to remember and say your name. huba huba huba.

Like I said before you don't need to be a business owner to give back. In fact as a business owner your sole motivation is PROFIT. So don't give me that I'm helping this and that because I'm a good person.

YOu are no MOther Teresa, Desmon Tutu, Gandhi or anyone like them who doesn't need profit to modivate their kindness.

I don't need to wear or adverstise a badge of honor to prove what I've need. Just know that I've done and continue. And PROFIT does not drive me. Plus success is not defined by how much money you put in your pocket. No matter how much countries like the US want you to believe.

DOUBLE-BULL FEATHERS! I don't think so, know-nothing.

You have read nothing that has been written.Responded to nothing that has been said. You have earplugs in your ears, and blindfolds over your eyes. Do you know how to read? Re-read the posts.

I repeat, answer the questions then:

How many people have you hired? In the DR? In your lifetime? How many people do you hire 'to make a difference?' All of the people I hire are my friends. Real friends. Probably another subject you have no experience in. How many other countries have you lived in to witness this 'poverty' you know so much about? Andyou Mr. Know-It-All? Name 'em or shut up. How much acclaim do you have in your home country? You can look me up in any Who's Who you choose to see my record.

WHERE ARE YOUR ANSWERS TO THOSE QUESTIONS?

I came here because I do NOT want acclaim. I want to be left alone. I am NOT rich. I have a DOMINICAN family. And you?

The sad fact of all this is that people learn to be poor and hungry from folks like you. teaching people that someone will always be there to help teaches them not to rely on themselves. I know it's hard for you to understand, but the biggest motivator of all is FEAR. FEAR that there will be no food on the table tonight and I will go hungry. FEAR that I can not put a roof over my head or my children's heads. Removing that FEAR does not help anyone. It's healthy. It makes you actually have to take RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF and not rely on someone else for your well being.

How do I know? Because I HAVE THAT FEAR. If I don't take care of myself and my family no good words from you or anyone else will. That's why I work for what I have and don't beg help from anyone else. Get a life. Get a job. And stop creating more poor people with your BS. Take some responsibility for yourself man!

Tom (aka XR)

I must be listening to a tape recorder.

Again, Sancochojoe has enough modesty and humility not to
1. step into your world of selfworth
2. brag, explain, describe, my accomplishments to anyone, especially you. Actions speak louder than words. If you are the great, I will find out. Enough said.

I know its difficult for you to believe that helping someone is not just cash in the wallet. I know forms of Capitalism can do that to people's way of thinking.

If you have the ability to help just one person, than one can be enough for people to make a difference. You need to get off this dollar value or head count to prove your worth to society.

I've been to many poor countires and poor regions. Listing them is not necessary. Again your debating with a person that does not need to carry a check list of my accomplishments, like you seem to champion.

I havn't seen much of "XanaduRanch" in many who's who.
But even if you are, I'm happy for you and keep up the good work.
A Nobel Peace Prize should be around the corner for you. I just hope you don't have to buy that.

your hammer is deadly at hitting nails on head. There was some earlier mention about "affirmative action" programs in the DR; and, you seemed to agree that that was so. Yes? Christ, I hope you didn't really mean it Tom.

There is old saying about international aid/assistance organizations: poor countries/people need aid/assistance, but even more than that, aid/assistance agencies [the UN being the biggest money grubber of them all] need poor people/countries [to exist]. God only knows how many huge beggar constituencies have been created and still exist because of handouts underwritten by the US, Canadians [tho' this year they've practically stopped all the giveaways] and Europeans.

For instance, it's quite something to see people wallow in garbage and filth, but won't walk a few meters to put trash in receptacles that the UN or their governments have set out. Seriously. The attitude is that it's the "patron's" obligation to give each shanty it's own garbage can. Or to put in a village hand water pump, teach everyone how to repair it, leave repair parts, then come back six months later to find the poor, helpless folk drinking out of a sewer-stream, with the parts still in the box....waiting for the "patron" to return and do repairs for them. To hell with the health education, guinea worm infestation, cholera and all the rest. Clean water? Who needs it really? Hire another UN specialist to do the repairs.

Disgusted, P

PS - my remarks are sure to cause this thread to be terminated because I didn't say DRDRDRDRDR except once. Sorry all

NOT RESPONING TO RESPONSES

Since you started this thread, at least give other posters the common decency to qualify your answers based on your knowledge. Bragging about your humility is very egotistical.
You obviously have not been reading either the content or tone of Xanadu's posts. You asked why people hated the poor: to paraphase the answer: X and others have responded with the answer that they don't hate the poor but don't like the
' poor is me " attitude that many Dominicans have, not just Dominicans either.

Yes, it is. Where? You expect people to believe you're an expert on the subject? Please enlighten us, the great unwashed. The question still hangs in the air!

The only people mentioning MONEY are the ones that want to steal it from those of us who actually earn it to give it away to people who stop trying to help themselves because they know someone like you will always be there to save them thus perpetuating the problem forever. That's BS. Who will be there to help me when I decide I want to stop working until 3-4-5 in the morning to earn money for food for my family. WHO? You?

The bottom line is still that the answer is still hard work, and perservance. Not handouts.

Tom (aka XR)

P.S.
I find what you write personally insulting because I moved here to get away from the limelight. I do not want credit for anything.I treat people compasionatley, and humanely, and generously. Not because it's PC but because I care about people passionately. And to have someone who can't even be bothered to read posts make comment on my life, when I've been shot at it, had my kids insulted and threatened, had crosses burned on my lawn, and on and on is more than just stupid. You need to shut up if you don't know what or who you're talking to and just stick to the subject.

Which is: I do not hate poor people. I have never said anything that could remotely be construed as such. And I have devoted my lifetime to helping people. Not just insulting people on silly message boards because they didn't agree with my methods of helping, like you.

What have you done? I would be interested in knowing. If you don't mind listing your 'accomplishments' that is.

walk a mile

Remember that part of the reason people flock to the third world from the industrialized world is to be able to have a higher quality of life. To do that means for most to be served. How can you resent the servants serving you?
My experience with the chicken in the Philippines is similar to what I have heard of people having with pigs and so forth in the D.R. But do I regret the money and time I spent? No I don not regret it. Would I do it again? Yes. I have some ideas of what I would like to do when I get to the D.R. permanently. Be the patron of a small little coop or something to build a little capitalist attitude.
Are the Dominicans any different than Americans? No I don't think so. How many unemployed coal miners wait around for the Union To get them a new Job?
The Dominicans are neither lazy nor dumb. They have learned to survive in a system that was set up under the Old Spanish and followed on under dictatorship. Even with the so-called free elections no one believes nor has faith in any government agency. We as ex pats contribute to this by accepting that bribes are a part of it. We demonstrate to the poor that they will always be poor because they do not have the money to buy security. So there for they party when they have money and find ways to survive when they don't. Give some one a $100 and they will spend it because tomorrow it is only worth $75.
It is a mentality similar to what we in the military go through when we are getting sent to a combat zone. We spend what we have and what we might have and what ever else we can get because who knows if we get another chance. It takes maturity and faith you will be around tomorrow not to spend it all today.

Well, people go to the DR for a variety of reasons, for example:

1.Warm weather
2.Beautifull beaches(some places).
3.The DR is close to the U.S. and canada.
4.The american dollar, british pound and euro goes a long way in the DR and a vacation there is alot less expensive than many other places.
5.I guess it's relatively cheap for north americans or europeans to open up buisinesses there.
6.Cheap sex with"exotic"dominican women and to a lesser extent men.Sorry folks, had to throw this one in there, because it's a fact.

Now,in response to the key question within the starting topic,I offer this:The reason that you find SOME americans or europeans who don't hesitate to vacation or frolick in poor third world countries, yet can't help but bemoan the lack of or consistency of basic infrastructure is beacuse, let's face it,the bulk of people traveling to such countries are middle class & above, the majority of whom have never went without a meal(for days on end) or who don't have any personal experiences living in poverty or deprivation that's close to the dominican norm.

We so-called"westerners"are accustomed to clean drinking water,consistant electricity,air conditioning,cable & satalite t.v. etc..

Perhaps the poor of north america & europe might be able to relate to third world living and survival mechanisms moreso than those from more privaledged backgrounds, but they typically can't afford to travel,so......

All in all I wouldn't say that dominicans are being exploited by tourists & tourism etc...,because the benefits are mutual and without the tourists upswing the DR would be much worse off.In short,we all have our own motivations!

later gators!

I told you before, I'm not interested in gloating. Sorry charlie.
But the post was initially not directed at you. You made it personal and you just fed fuel to the fire.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and I'll just say keep up the good work since I don't know you personally.

But the topic was stated for those who it applies to. If it does not apply to you.

"Don't have a cow", Bart Simpson

But if I ever decide to live there, it would simply be for retirement. Why? because the Caribbean is where my family is from.

I'm in the States simply for Capitalistic Gain.....and I'm being honest. Other than that, the states has nothing else to offer me.

And what is everyone elses motivation in the DR?????

Please do tell.

All wind and no substance.

You yell for everyone else to expalin what they have done. Then when they do and ask what you have done you accuse them of bragging, and then decline to offer your resume,or your experiences, with the explanation that you've done so much you don't have to. How convenient.

Put your money where your enormously big mouth is, fool. Or everyone will know exactly what you're all about - nothing.

ONE MORE TIME: The answer to success for anyone is hard work and perserverence. Not sticking your hand out and waiting for someone to put something in it. That applies to Dominicans, Americans, Malaysians, LTSnyder, Sancochojoe, in-laws, and blood relatives if they behave that way. yea yea yea name calling again......you define yourself more and more.

You want my resume? are you hiring. My services are pricy.

I only accused you of bragging.

And if you believe helping someone is with just cash in the wallet, then thats where we agree to disagree and that is why there will continue to be a disconnect between you and I. No problem with me, But I wont call you names because you don't agree with me.

I agree nobody should whine and cry if they don't have nothing to cry about. But I also know everyone does not start from the same playing field.

I would never define the level of success between someone who is born poor and someone who inherited money or anybody in between. I could not and would not judge them in that manner or pass judgement if the person poor is begging for money. It is not in my nature, but I do understand people find comfort in blaming the poor for their situation.

I could easily compare someone like you to, lets say the owner of the Washington Redskins....he is in his late 30's multimillionaire.
Should I say, "Look XanaduRanch why arn't you as succesful as the owner of the Redskins. Are you that lazy you can move up as quickly as him. he's only in his 30's and owns and NFL team. Why are you spending your time running around some island when you should be figuring out how to become a millionaire."

No I cant say that. I would not spend my energy equating my success with poor people in the DR or any other place. I would not make general statements that poor people in DR are spending their whole day begging and playing games.

That is the point of my whole question, if people like that frustrate you why live there?

So the DR is better? Are you finding that people in the DR are working hard for their dreams vs. begging? That's not the vibe I'm getting from this thread.

In what context are you talking about these beggers? Do you mean like beggars in the street? Because if that's what you were trying to escape by leaving the US, you went to the wrong country. I wouldn't go to any country in the carribean to escape beggars.. try somewhere like Canada or Iceland or even come back to the US. I don't see street beggars as that big of a problem, unless you're in NYC and ironically enough a lot of the beggars are Dominican... Okay, I don't know that for sure but they are spanish speakers so I guess they could be Boriquas or Cubans but I"m betting Dominican though.

Hehehe... Tom is at it again. Tom you must need to get laid or something.

My question is why equate living in the DR with not liking poor? What has one thing have to do with the other?

You can still live in the DR and hate poor people and you won't even have to associate with poor people for the most part.

Escott said:

Your right it does not equate, but it would be much of a topic either.

Some people do move there into gated communities, some stay within the compound of a hotel resort simply to stay away from that.

You are absolutely correct.

But poor people tend to occupy many posters opinions good and bad.
