Driving
Hi,
I have been driving in the DR off an don for 15 years and have seen a whole generation of change... It is never "safe" to drive anywhere in the country, though I have only been in one accident ever and the truck rear-ended me.
I LOVE driving in the DR. Beautiful landscape, interesting stops you CANNOT make taking public transportation, etc... But you have to be careful and take your time. It is a worthwhile experience if you are patient. Also, buy ALL the insurance and deal only with a global rental agency. Europcar is okay, but a US biggie like Hertz or Avis ends doubt about payment of claims if you DO get into a scrape.
DO IT! You will remember the experience forever.
