For most Dominicans, you're just another pendejo gringo that rides a moto.
If you had a jeepeta and wore a decent suit, you would get more respect, sad truth.

Remember you're dealing with thugs, that would think nothing in paying RD$20,000 to have you permanently removed.
You're not going to win against this scum unless you get some weight on your side and a decent lawyer.
At some stage you have to decide how far you're willing to fight and how deep you're willing to dig financially.

There are crooks, scammers, corrupt politicians and dishonest lawyers everywhere. For quite a few years we had planned on settling in Belize when we retired. Being en English speaking country would have made the transition easier we thought. While it may be easier to hang on to your money there, open bribery and govt. death squads known as the GSU presented a certain element of finality to finding yourself on the losing end of a particular proposition.

We know that the DR like many third world countries poses a certain degree of challenge to those seeking to maintain their level of lifestyle at less expense than at home. We remain hopeful that those who mind their own business, aren't too annoying, aren't too easily annoyed and can keep their wits about them can make a go of it in the DR.

Bad things happen everywhere and like an airplane crash, there is usually a clear set of events that lead up to the culmination of a bad experience. Rarely does an asteroid fall out of the sky and knock you on the head just because you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Usually, a party has a hand in their own downfall.

We still believe that there is more good than bad. To think otherwise and proceed would be folly. That's not to say that there can't be a plan B and a few pesos stashed away to beat a hasty retreat if circumstances warrant.
