Tainos in the DR?

Interesting topic. However I have a question or two and maybe a suggestion. Please feel free to correct me for this is my thinking. Question? From what I understand and read the word ?ndian?means ?bruto?, ?stupid like?, and slow. Reading on the history of Tainos, the people of land and water (not referring to them only) are Indigenous people, with a broad level of intelligence for survival under difficult circumstances. I met some Tainos from Puerto Rico who performed a spectacular dance and taught us that the Taino was spread thruout most of the carribean. Cuba, Jamaica, and Haiti are the true Taino names. The island of Hispa?ola was named by Cristobal Colon (as well as Santo Domingo) whom helped the Spanish forces just about finish with the Taino people because most refused to accept catholicism because they did not understand it!!! This island is truly Haiti an indigenous name. Quisqueya is an indigenous name named by our true people the Tainos. The Spaniards came, destroyed their morals and souls by robbing them of their precious metals and stones as well as raping their young woman and daughters. This happened thruout all the carribean, west indies, as well as parts of S. America and Mexico where they lasted for 400 yrs. hence 5 de Mayo. Anyway this is a very broard arguable subject. I want to point out that about the time the Tainos were being exterminated, the Spaniards brought rule thru the catholic church and the French took half the island naming its city St. Domingue (did I spell it right?). During their occupation they bought over 900 thousand African slaves to what is now (and has always been) Haiti, to harvest, and work the cotton fields and more. The French also robbed all the treasures that half of the island offered. Later the French, English and Dutch navies whipped up on the Spaniards and drove them out of the carribean and Florida (which was named by the Spaniards). Our mixture (Dominican that is) is of African, thru Haiti (yes all you dark skin brothers and sisters have Haitian blood so dont get mad), Spanish, and Taino. Years later we had endentured slaves move here and thruout the islands from the US for their freedom after 7 yrs. of service. You can look this up in Nat Geo. Also, we were blessed with many Lebanese citizens. Thats why we have many Dominicans with Arab first and last names. And yes I have met many ?white?Haitians who tell me that is their French side. People, please correct anything I?ve written in regards to my limited knowledge of history concerning this topic. So long as it is both educational both for me and our members ok? Thanks. Oh! By the way a cool story to read Bicycle Diaries written by Che Guaverra?s daughter based on some of his diaries she found. On a course that took him from Argentina thru all of S. America on a beat up motorbike. This is where I learned what the word Indian stands for after he heard it mentioned alot in reference to the Bolivian indigenous people. The whites referred them to Indios because of their humbleness, timidness, and shyness which they took for being stupid, slow, and feeble minded, which of course is not true. They have villages thruout Bolivia where they live in the same manner they did hundreds of yrs ago. So I hope this was a little helpful to those that find it is correct or least somewhat accurate info. Happy Holidays DR1 members y Feliz A?o Nuevo......................Leo

Anyone with very light or white skin with non-caucasian nose or lips or both.

You could also be considered a blanco de jojoto, which is the Dominican way of saying a white person with non-caucasian facial features but with straight hair.

Thank you Nals!

Leo

Please take time to read the previous posts on this thread, ie the Tainos were never exterminated as we have thoroughly discussed and proved by numerous facts including dna, anything else, well, is just a lot of "bull".

thanks

As I mentioned earlier all the Dominicans that work for him call him "El Peruano" like it was a fact or something. What is also funny is when I met him when they were fixing the power lines in the subdivision he asked me (as most Domincans do) "where are you from" and I typically say I'm a "gringo" or "norteamericano" and then I asked him where he was from and he answered me with a straight face "Peru" and I said "really" and he says "no, but I tell everybody that so they won't keep bugging me".

l.
This is very common among dominicans.

if you look too chinese they will call you "El Chino"
if you your hair is light colored you are called "La gringa/el gringo"
if you look like chespirito.....You are "El Mejicano"
and if you are too dark they will call you el Haitiano.

LOL, typical Dominican we always have some Spaniard in the our father of mother side, plus you added Italian to the mixed LOL, look at your nose, you have African/Haitian in your blood.

We Dominican are all mixed, we are like chocolate with milk ;) :bunny: that's why our skin color is so beautiful ;)

Yeah and why are women are beutiful. But I do not think I have any Haitian/African ancestry to my knowledge. All my darker family members have straight hair which I'm guessing is from the Taino's blood.

Hey Nals!! What about me? look my picture. <a href="http://s282.photobucket.com/albums/kk260/paradisetrans/?action=view&current=JJeltaino600x450.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk260/paradisetrans/JJeltaino600x450.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
You're blanco or blanco de jojoto.

To any Dominican its obvious that you are not a "pure" white, that you have some mixture in you, whether its Taino or African or both is irrelevant.

Hence, you're probably often referred to as blanco or blanco de jojoto, but you will never be considered a rubio - which is applied to any white person with a nordic look regardless if they are blonde or not.

The "rubio" category is what Americans consider a "real" white.

Of course, we all know that if the concept of whose black is a social construct, so too is the case with whites; but that's another story for another thread that is prohibited on DR1. Ha ha :cheeky:

Yes Nals, I agreed with you in the DR I'm considered as Blanco, but I know that in my family we has some mixtures, for example my father's grand came from France and from Italy, my Mother?s grand I'm talking about five or six generations they came from Spain, but some one in my mom's family I'm not sure, maybe my grand, grandmother she was a pure Taino lady from Villa Vasquez. In my family you can find blonde white skin people with blue, or green eyes. Look at The picture of the baby on the Huggies diapers this is my grandson he is white with blue eyes.

We have some many mixtures in the DR that you never know where you come from. I have friends in Santiago that are on the process to acquire a dual citizenship of the countries in the European Union. One of them got his Belgium nationality; his grandfather came during Trujillo?s government to work like engineer contractor in some of the important constructions at this time.

The most common theory is that they hailed from the Orinoco valley in South America (present day Venezuela), and that they belonged to the same family of the natives found on the Amazonian basin.
