We are in Florida right now, and we are headed back to the DR tomorrow to pick up our stuff. Hopefully, we can fit it all back in the suitcases that we brought down. We came up with empty suitcases, planning to pick up more "stuff" and sell our car. We sat down and reviewed our finances, and we decided to come back to the US.
The ONLY reason that we are coming back is financial. As I had stated before, we have a young daughter who has Down syndrome. We checked 6 companies, and they all denied her health insurance. We still have a policy from Maine that is costing us 750 US per month. If we keep that policy, we cannot afford to live in the DR on the budget that we had set. If we drop that policy and just use local insurance, we will likely never be able to reinsure her again in the US. Our youngest child is a very bright little boy, and we likely would want to educate him in the US when he is older. We do not want to bar ourselves from returning. When our daughter reaches adulthood, Medicare will pick her up, but we would not be able to come back and get health insurance for her for 10 years. Our children are too young for us to make that kind of a committment.
We had discussed all kinds of things, and we almost bought a home in the DR. But, we have been going 4 or 5 hundred bucks a month over budget. If we continue at that rate, we will eat away our "liquid" capital. We discussed buying in the DR, investing the money in the DR, etc., but we still have that insurance issue. It is something that we had never thought of before we moved there. For those of you who have met my daughter, you know why we were so shocked that she was denied. She is such a little angel!!
So, it is with great sadness that we are moving back. I will someday go back and update on our four months in the DR. We will be without internet for the rest of this month, but I will get to it. I need to update the budget and stuff.
BTW, Timex, What did you do with the post?????
