i think its interesting that nobody has mentioned Leonel in any way yet?
Do you know why nobody mentioned Leonel? because he doesn't have a political trajectory, he is a lucky guy who inherited Balaguer's power.
Pte. Balaguer knowing that he was arriving to end of his political career and that at his 96 years of age there it was not more chance for him and for his political party PRSC so in a big effort to save the nation from been governed by a Haitian born (Jose Francisco Pena Gomez) signed an unification with PLD for the political elections of 1996.
Name of the patriotic unification:

Frente Nacional Patriotico....

This was the slogan used in all the political meeting at this time.

Todos los caminos malos estan cerrados !!!

is it just me? leonel is the DR's Clinton. Clinton is taking responsibility for the biggest economic boom in its history when this is clearly the Internet's responsible for it, which lead to millions employed. leonel is taking credit for heavy tourism investment leading to greater economic expandtion.

I hope that someday I'll live to see my country being lead by a person who understand freedom and Austrian economic. having a capitalist ideology is the only way the world can live in a better place, just look at the east

And thank you, Lambada, for always showing us respect.

Having been glued to the BBC & The secret of Dimbleby’s 16-hour stint? last week during the election in my country of origin, the UK, I can promise you that no UK poster on this board has any bragging rights whatsoever when it comes to organising an election.........:ermm:

I'm still glued because although there is a result there is no real outcome yet. What a disorganised shambles in many areas, I guess the only thing that didn't happen was the selling of polling ID cards for RD$5000....and I can't even be sure of that!

I have a feeling that the JCE will shine as a beacon here next Sunday in comparison. Please excuse the intermission, now back to Best DR President.

So you think the internet alone was responsible for the creation of more than 24 millions jobs in 8 years?, really?. Thanks for the enlightenment!.

Why nobody mention Leonel?, well, his legacy is not done yet. His first period was half decent, his second and third have been pure embarrassment. I personally hope that he'll end eating noodle soup in Riker Island.

there's a reason why these good things happen, and thats often via political encouragement and support.

look at how haiti is doing by comparison.

And Nick Robinson was on for 25 hours.

And on the subject of DR elections and the trucks with the loudspeakers: a book on observations of ex-pats' observations of so-called Dominican unsophistication should be fun. But I'm too lazy.

But you could never accuse Balaguer of being too ethical, so maybe the difference wasn't so much in intelligence as in the moral application of it?
Yes, Juan Bosch's 6 months rule was much more ethical than the 24 years of Balaguer.

I think you may add the fact that Bosch was shooting down prospects of buying more airplanes for the Air Force with his famed quote: "Para que tantos aviones si nosotros no estamos en guerra?". That irked several General's who were in line to collect huge commissions out of those US$ valued contracts.
While there probably was the 'commissions' dissatisfaction, the very real threat the DR was subjected to from the communist countries (especially from Cuba given Fidel Castro's failed invasion in an attempt to establish a communist regime in the DR); one can very well argue that at that time, it was imperative to show, even if it was bluffing, a strong Dominican military.

Bosch himself became aware of this when Haitian dictator Duvalier ordered his military to violate Dominican sovereignty which resulted in bullet fights between the Dominican army and Haitian soldier along the border. Not to mention the war that Bosch himself almost started with Haiti.

yes I do think the Internet had the productive capacity to employ millions of people. why? just let's say that a factory moves into a depressed town and employs 1,000 workers well all of sudden you'll see supermarkets, restaurant, malls, police, firefighters, hospitals and many other jobs that are necessary to provide for those. so yes the Internet was responsible for it, just like in the 50's tv came in and gave the US another boom.

now what did Clinton do to mess things up for us, sign nafta to ship our jobs over seas, over taxed and regulated with safety and enviormental rules. grew governent started unnecessary agencies and taxed the middle and upper class heavily to give money to the lazy poor

Can somebody put her out of my misery, please.

Let me give you a helping hand. Who need environmental protection when all we have to do is "drill baby drill" (or is it "spill baby spill?). How many gallons a day is it now?, like 210,000?.

On the OP question; why is it that nobody mention Trujillo?.

On the OP question; why is it that nobody mention Trujillo?.

Perhaps because the OP's question has been asked numerous times on this forum, and those that have mentioned Trujillo have already stated and debated their reasons why ad nauseam. Maybe some people don't feel like arguing about this for the umpteenth time...

I agree with you, wasn't proposing his as the best president. Practically everyone I know thinks he was the worst bar Trujillo, some of them as a result of having experienced directly or indirectly the full force of his "12 years" and in despair at his lingering legacy of clientilism and paternalism/asistencialismo.

I was only referring to the fact that many people, even former supporters, refer to him as "el doctor Balaguer" and not as "el presidente Balaguer", in response to the comment about Bosch being called "profesor" as opposed to "presidente".

Many people acknowledge Balaguer crooked side, but also acknowledge that he saved the forests, planned ahead with building new schools....etc. He had a vision to the future that involved more than personal power.
