105 megawatt barge coming in April
A 105 megawatt generator barge will dock in the port of Boca Chica in the beginning of April. The plant is expected to go on line shortly after, contributing to reduce blackouts in the DR. The announcement was made in Singapore by Temístocles Montás, Technical Secretary of the Presidency, who is accompanying President Leonel Fernández on his Asian tour. He explained that the barge, property of Western Energy, has a cost of US$60 million. Its installation will not cost the Dominican state, as it will derive its profits from sale of energy to whoever will purchase this. The owner of Western Energy, Mr. Dato Joseph Chong, a Malaysian businessman, had visited President Fernández in Santo Domingo. Montás announced in Singapore, that the barge is one of two that will come. Another is expected to arrive in July.
Pedestrian overpasses to be built
The Ministry of Public Works announced it will build pedestrian crossways over 27 de Febrero Expressway (between Núñez de Cáceres and Dr. Defilló) and John F. Kennedy Expressway (in front of Leche Rica). Several persons have died when attempting to cross the dangerous avenues.
Vehicles with tinted windows to be stopped
The National Police is detaining drivers of vehicles with tinted glass. The Chief of the Police ordered that all vehicles remove the tinting material. He said that assailants have taken advantage of the tinting to carry out assaults on victims within their cars. The measure began to be applied to taxi cars, but the Police said it would be extended to all vehicles. Yesterday, 150 cars were detained and taken to the Police headquarters until the owners peeled their vehicles to get their release.
No daytime maritime transit along Ozama River
Transit of ships will be banned during daylight hours as of the opening of a floating bridge across Ozama River. The new floating bridge near the Port of Don Diego will enter into operation at the end of this month. It has capacity for six lanes and will contribute to decongestion traffic along the avenue. Once it is in operation, two of the four lanes of the Duarte Bridge will be alternatively closed to allow for major repairs. The floating bridge will be in service for the nine months time the bridge repairs will take, according to a report in El Caribe newspaper. The floating bridge can handle all kinds of cargo, even that of heavy trucks.
One million children to be vaccinated
Ministry of Public Health and 10 international cooperation agencies announced a five-year vaccination program (2000-2004). More than a million children will be given DPT, measles and tuberculosis shots. The World Bank is making a US$3 million contribution to the program. The program also has the participation of the Pan-American Health Organization, the United States Agency for International Development, UNICEF, the Interamerican Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, International Cooperation Agency of Spain (AECI), International Plan of the DR, Malta Order, Sammy Sosa Foundation, and the Dominican Social Security Institute (IDSS).
