The Central Bank in its February 2024 economic performance report highlights that the monthly indicator of economic activity (IMAE) registers an expansion of 6.2% for February 2024, much higher than the 4.6% observed in January 2024.

The Central Bank says average interannual growth now stands at 5.4% for the first two months of 2024.

The Central Bank stresses that the recent economic performance reflects the positive impacts of monetary policy and the high levels of public capital spending since mid-2023. The year-on-year variation for February 2024 reflects the good performance of the productive apparatus in an environment of price stability.

The recovery trend is in line with the projections of international organizations and risk-rating firms, which place the Dominican Republic as one of the fastest-growing economies in the region for...

International jail expert Roberto Santana reaffirmed his statements that the Las Parras Jail can be in use with less than 30% of what President Luis Abinader had said was needed to conclude the jail. Santana insists an analysis of the jail situation in 2021 determined RD$288 million plus RD$72 million for access roads to be built by the Ministry of Public Works was needed to turn the mega jail with its 84 buildings into eight separate smaller jails with separate access roads. Santana is regarded as the leading jail reform specialist in Latin America

Santana said on the program that the Monday, 11 March 2024 fire at the La Victoria Jail with at least 13 inmate deaths, he received a call four days later from the President who consulted him on the difference between the RD$1.6 billion of the Ministry of Housing vs the RD$288 million plus RD$72 million in 2022 that he says is what...

Penitentiary system expert Roberto Santana disputes President Abinader’s statement that RD$1.6 billion are needed to finish Las Parras jail. President Luis Abinader responded to criticism of negligence in the handling of the La Victoria jail issues and announced a follow-up committee for the jail issues. The newly appointed woman-in-charge Police colonel at the La Victoria Jail has been removed, after less than a month on the job. A new jail director, Colonel Roberto Nivar has been named.

The actions follow a major fire in an area of cells at the jail that resulted in the death of at least 13 inmates, many of whom have yet to be identified. A second blaze at a store inside the jail happened in less than 48 hours.

Once the first fire at La Victoria occurred, Abinader justified the not opening of the RD$7 billion Las Parras jail in Guerra on grounds that RD$1.6 billion were needed to fix the jail as it was built on a swamp area.

Roberto Santana, the former rector of the...

This is Easter Week, or Holy Week in the Dominican Republic – from Sunday, 24 March to Sunday, 31 March 2024. For many, it is a time of reflection, but for most, it is a time to meet with family and friends or to go to the beach or local swimming hole at a nearby river or waterfall.

Minister of the Environment Miguel (Mickey) Ceara Hatton has issued a call to avoid doing damage to the nation’s beaches and rivers. Refuse and other rubbish, makeshift lodging or rafts, always left abandoned, clutter up these areas and result in the degradation of the natural environment.

Ceara Hatton reminded the citizens and visitors that Resolution 0050-2023 establishes that it is a crime to abandon anything material or structural that is not part of the natural environment on a beach or river bank. He urged the citizens to become aware of the need to strengthen environmental awareness and...

Due to work being done on the main access route into the city of Samana, the National Transit and Transportation Institute (Intrant) has created a bypass that will allow visitors to the city to go around the bottleneck. The detour is a road without a name that goes by the Samana baseball stadium and nears the waters of Samana Bay. Patience is required as the increased traffic and the smaller road will cause traffic tie-ups.

The Intrant has provided a map of the area.

President Luis Abinader calmly responded to British journalist Stephen Sackur of the BBC program Hard Talk on 20 March 2024. The journalist did not do his homework and instead threw at the President several denunciations that have repeatedly been disproven in the media in the past.

President Luis Abinader responded with a straightforward demeanor to the accusations during the tough interview for UK audiences.

In the interview, Abinader was queried about potential adjustments to his government’s deportation policy concerning the worsening of the chaos in Haiti, given the contrast in the stability and progress in the Dominican Republic, and the good reputation of the country.

Abinader opened the interview responding that on this side of the border, life is normal, with the country expected to grow 5% in 2024. “We are a growing country, our industries our...

The UN Chief of Mission in the Dominican Republic, Josue Gastelbondo Amaya, told reporters that their task was for “organized, fair, and regulated management (of refugees).

Apparently, there was a lot of confusion regarding this statement.

President Luis Abinader was prompt to state in no uncertain terms that the Dominican Republic will continue to deport...

With Haitians having almost decided who gets on the transitional council, the members now need to move to choose the acting prime minister.

In a late development, on Sunday, 24 March 2024 it was known that Dominique Dupuy, the only woman in the nine-member council, had resigned in response to derogatory remarks following her appointment.

Le Nouvelliste of Haiti reports that the negotiations are moving at a snail’s pace at the Presidential Transitional Council. Prime Minister Ariel Henry is now in California as he has been impeded to return. He has said he will officially resign once his successor is appointed by the new higher government council.

The PTC was appointed as a result of the 11 March agreement on a transitional governance arrangement for Haiti that the Caribbean Community (Caricom) facilitated following the continued...

The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) reports that so far this year 6.5 tons of cocaine have been seized from drug traffickers. El Dia highlights how the southern coast of the country has become the collection center for large caches of cocaine that are sent by South American cartels to drug trafficking structures along the country’s southern coast for eventual transshipment to the US and Europe.

In March 2024 alone the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) reports having seized almost four tons of cocaine, of which 2,352 kilograms in the south central Peravia province.

El Dia reports that the volume and consistency with which these shipments are sent suggests that the southern region (San Cristobal, Peravia, Azua, along with Barahona and Pedernales in the southwest) has displaced the eastern region in terms of drug trafficking operations.

The First Court of Instruction of the Monte Plata province issued on Friday, 22 March 2024 a sentence for two years of suspended prison against Wilkin García Peguero (Mantequilla), for abuse of trust. Suspended prison means the charged will not have to serve the judge sentence as long as he meets the conditions of the ruling.

Mantequilla operated 3.14 Inversiones World Wide in the town of Sabana Grande de Boyá, Monte Plata province. The unregulated entity was investigated for operating a Ponzi scheme that disseminated the savings of investors, mostly from the Monte Plata area.

Superintendent of Banks Alejandro Fernandez had raised a red flag in September 2022 notifying potential investors that Mantequilla was not a financial wiz, and that instead, people were vulnerable to being victims of a pyramid-style fraud. The Fernandez alert opened eyes to many and affected the entry...
