We (17 0f us) stayed at the Casa Marina Beach Resort in February of 2002. As a travel agent, I tend to look at things in a different light, than the normal traveller. The Resort itself is non-descript when you see it from the bus for the first time...very plain, nothing flashy. The grounds are well kept, very clean and neat with special attention to the areas around the bars and restaurants. The rooms are adequate, everything is there that you would need, basic and clean, which is what a 3 star property is, basic. The decor in the rooms is bright and cheery with lots of color. Room service varied from one building to the next however. Our friends were in Building 10 and they developed a leak in the ceiling in the bathroom,.... that took 3 days to get repaired but when we had the same problem,(in Building 11) it was fixed that same day.

Be sure to take face cloths and your own face soap with you. Face cloths are non-existent and the hotel soap almost tore the hide off! The toilet paper is not like we have at home and they want you to not put paper in the toilet, use the wastepaper basket, so be prepared for that! Some people complained that they did not have hot water or much water pressure but we did not enounter those problems. Power outages are common at the resort but they are short!

There is a good variety of food at the El Batey Buffet restaurant and there are theme nights throughout the week. The flavor of Dominican food is at every meal, plaintain, rice, beans and yucca were in evidence at every sitting. The flavor of the food was good, the chicken was always tasty as was the fish..the beef however left a lot to be desired. They cook with a lot of butter and coconut oil so the change in your diet may do things to your digestive system.

We dined at Luiggis on two occasions and the meals were delicious. Service was great. The SeaScape left us wanting though...not the best cuisine and we dined there twice as well..hoping for a good feed of seafood. There is an extra supplement of 100 pesos for some of the seafood dishes and it really was not great. The Jalapeno restaurant at the Casa Marina Reef was an excellent place to go for dinner, good food, great atmosphere and excellent service.

All in all the resorts are worth the money but keep in mind that you are in the Dominican Republic..not at home and there are differences! Be open minded and relax and enjoy and I am sure you will have a great time.

One thing I will add is that the rooms in Building 11 are close to the bar and we needed to use ear plugs to be able to sleep at night. The ocean is also very loud as the beach is close to that area... for some people it is a soothing sound....for me, a land locked Albertan, it was a noise!

One of our party had a problem with the people in the store at the Resort...and it developed into a not too nice situation so I hope the hotel resolves the customer service issues with the owners of the store. I know letters were sent to both the tour company and the AMHSA chain. Dive shop owner, Maximilliano was great to work with and his staff were good as well. English and spanish speaking so there was no language problem at all.

I would stay at the Reef in the future just for the fact that it is a newer property and the grounds are nicer.

ps-Grounds and most facilities are wheel chair accessible if anyone has concerns in that area.
