President-elect Luis Abinader’s named Education Minister Roberto Furcal said yesterday that it will be next week when he will announce when schools will reopen in the Dominican Republic. Incumbent minister of Education Antonio Peña Mirabal has said classes would start with a mix of in-person and online classes on 24 August 2020. The new government starts 16 August 2020.

Anton Tejada, president of the Ainep, the private school union, has requested the government authorize a flexible reopening nationwide. The fact is that conditions around the country are not the same. In many areas, there is a low incidence of the Covid-19 virus. Likewise, many private schools have the resources to go ahead with combinations of in-person and online classes.
