According to the newly released “Macroeconomic Situation Report by Gender” regarding contributions to the Dominican Social Security System, to which 2,237,967 people (53.5% of men and 46.5% of women) contributed last November, women have on average a slightly higher average wage (2.1%), as they receive a higher salary in occupational groups with higher academic degrees.
As of November 2022, women earned on average higher wages than men in public administration, transportation and warehousing, and construction. Although in these activities, except for the first, men have a higher share, women are occupying positions with a higher degree of qualification. More women every year than men graduate from Dominican universities.
The difference is also because more men are employed in the lesser-paying informal sector than women – 61.7% men compared to 52.9% women.
